An open rehearsal for a hybrid theatrical experiment, from the makers of Grand Theft Hamlet, that reimagines Shakespeare’s Macbeth within the virtual world of a first person shooter video game.

The Alternate Realities Development Space offers a unique chance to attend, participate in and feedback on Open Rehearsals for new works in development and to be a part of the live creative process. Working simultaneously on stage and in game, Sound and Fury bridges physical and digital spaces. Macbeth and his wife Lady M are gamers manipulating their avatars like puppets, with in-game action projected immersively onto screens to create a layered experience that challenges traditional ideas of theatrical presence. At its heart lies a question central to both gaming and Macbeth: who is really in control?

Audience will also have the opportunity to become ‘players,’ joining the game on PlayStations in the theatre, giving them genuine agency in shaping the story. There will then be the opportunity to feedback as part of focus groups on the audience experience.

Free, advance booking required - limited capacity.

Directors: Pinny Grylls and Sam Crane, Producer: Rebecca Wolff. Sound and Fury is supported by XR Stories and by Immersive Arts funding. @xr_stories @sheffdocfest @immersivearts_uk @project.1961

Delighted to announce that @project.1961 has been awarded 50k EXPAND funding from @immersivearts_uk to further develop our project Sound and Fury.

We are incredibly honoured to be one of the 142 projects across the UK receiving support this funding round. This grant wil allow us to build upon the work we did with the previous round of EXPERIMENT funding from Immersive Arts UK to take our vision for hybrid, immersive theatre to the next level.

What is Sound and Fury?

Following our work on Grand Theft Hamlet, we are diving back into the digital void to reimagine Shakespeare’s Macbeth within a virtual gaming world.

This isn’t just a play—it’s a collision of live performance and gaming:

⚔️ Hybrid Reality: Performed simultaneously on a physical stage and inside an online game.

🕹️ Audience as Players: Whether in-person or remote via Discord, audiences become active “players” in the drama, shaping scenes through collective “flashmob” actions.

🔕 Radical Accessibility: As a deaf artist-led project, we are embedding BSL, creative captioning, and haptic technology into the very fabric of the art, not just as add-ons, but as expressive storytelling tools.

This project explores what “liveness” truly means when code and flesh perform side-by-side. We are so grateful to Immersive Arts for believing in this “hunch” that theatre and gaming are two sides of the same coin.

Huge thanks to the partners making this possible: Arts Council England, Immersive Arts UK

This is so cool. A lot of people automatically assume that anything associated with video game culture must be terrible for kids, bad for families, and a negative for society in general. So we are hugely proud and grateful to @commonsenseorg for recognising our film Grand Theft Hamlet as one of their Best Movies of 2025.

Also I LOVE the language guidance 😊, and the suggestions for family discussions on Grand Theft Hamlet are genuinely brilliant

Trying to stage a production of Hamlet in Grand Theft Auto without being murdered by other players is quite the challenge, so what if you had to navigate access issues as well? 🎮

A pleasure to interview @pinnygrylls as she’s named one of @bafta’s Breakthrough artists for 2025. Read my full interview with Pinny now over at LiamODell.com.

📸: BAFTA/Hollie Fernando.

[Video description: Pinny, a white woman with short brown hair and a silver tip, speaks to the camera. Intro text at the beginning reads: ‘Pinny Grylls on Grand Theft Hamlet’s access curveballs’.

Transcript: I had to do live captioning, but the problem was I can’t wear headphones over my hearing aids, so I had bone conducting headphones that were Bluetooth, but then I had to find a way of getting the audio that was going into them, into the live captioning technology, so that I had some live captions, which were imperfect, of course.

I do think that always we can improve accessibility for people in games but I think, on the whole, game spaces are much loved by disabled people generally, because they’re actually weirdly more accessible than some other spaces. I mean, if you’ve got any physical disabilities that you struggle to get to like the theatre, or you struggle to get to cinemas or whatever it might be, gaming is often a place where you can participate in and be part of a community. A lot of people with neurodiversity who actually really loved our film, they were really, really into it. We had lots of people really want to collect the merch, they were really into our film, and I think because it represented their community, in terms of the diversity of people that play games, and they saw themselves in it somehow.

So I’m a massive fan of games in regards to being alternative spaces for people to be, and make community, and disabled people are mostly, I think, quite welcome there.’]
