Delighted to announce that @project.1961 has been awarded 50k EXPAND funding from @immersivearts_uk to further develop our project Sound and Fury. We are incredibly honoured to be one of the 142 projects across the UK receiving support this funding round. This grant wil allow us to build upon the work we did with the previous round of EXPERIMENT funding from Immersive Arts UK to take our vision for hybrid, immersive theatre to the next level. What is Sound and Fury? Following our work on Grand Theft Hamlet, we are diving back into the digital void to reimagine Shakespeare’s Macbeth within a virtual gaming world. This isn’t just a play—it’s a collision of live performance and gaming:⚔️ Hybrid Reality: Performed simultaneously on a physical stage and inside an online game.🕹️ Audience as Players: Whether in-person or remote via Discord, audiences become active “players” in the drama, shaping scenes through collective “flashmob” actions.🔕 Radical Accessibility: As a deaf artist-led project, we are embedding BSL, creative captioning, and haptic technology into the very fabric of the art, not just as add-ons, but as expressive storytelling tools. This project explores what “liveness” truly means when code and flesh perform side-by-side. We are so grateful to Immersive Arts for believing in this “hunch” that theatre and gaming are two sides of the same coin.Huge thanks to the partners making this possible: Arts Council England, Immersive Arts UKCheck out the full funding announcement and explore the other incredible projects in our bio by @pinnygrylls

An open rehearsal for a hybrid theatrical experiment, from the makers of Grand Theft Hamlet, that reimagines Shakespeare’s Macbeth within the virtual world of a first person shooter video game. The Alternate Realities Development Space offers a unique chance to attend, participate in and feedback on Open Rehearsals for new works in development and to be a part of the live creative process. Working simultaneously on stage and in game, Sound and Fury bridges physical and digital spaces. Macbeth and his wife Lady M are gamers manipulating their avatars like puppets, with in-game action projected immersively onto screens to create a layered experience that challenges traditional ideas of theatrical presence. At its heart lies a question central to both gaming and Macbeth: who is really in control?Audience will also have the opportunity to become ‘players,’ joining the game on PlayStations in the theatre, giving them genuine agency in shaping the story. There will then be the opportunity to feedback as part of focus groups on the audience experience. Free, advance booking required - limited capacity.Directors: Pinny Grylls and Sam Crane, Producer: Rebecca Wolff. Sound and Fury is supported by XR Stories and by Immersive Arts funding. @xr_stories @sheffdocfest @immersivearts_uk @project.1961 Come and join us ! Getting sold out but one day still has some availability! by @pinnygrylls

As my sidecar career I worked for 15 years or so as a video ethnographer - and have spent many a happy hour embedded in people’s homes trying to understand them without judgement. This may be very controversial to say but the ethnographic research process (for me at least) was not really a science and has very little to do with data. Instead it had a lot to do with intuition and deep forms of listening and observation. It is about giving people a non-judgmental space in which to reveal themselves and I always tried to lead with deep curiosity and kindness when I asked questions and watched them live. On reflections it was like a 15 year university degree in human nature. And even though no one other then the clients saw the footage I shot - doing this work made me a better storyteller and writer and more importantly it made me a better more compassionate human. This was the career I pursued while my children were small and while I wrestled with my new disability - aquired in 2016. It was a good place to be at that time. If anything because it kept me and my family fed and clothed. It took me until I was 46 to make my first feature film. And this is why. For those of you that worry that you are not getting there fast enough as filmmakers; Make sure you don’t forget that not everyone’s path is a straight one. And that the things you do when you are making other plans can be the things that make you great at being you. They are the things that give you your stories to tell. I am a massive fan of the anthropologist Margaret Mead and I loved her approach to understanding human nature. What she did had nothing to do with data and targets and algorithms. It had nothing to do with rushing anywhere fast. She sat for hour upon hour with people, learned their language and ate their food with them. She did this most famously with women from all across the world and was able to enter their world in a way that the male Anthropologists who were her peers could not be bothered to do. When I lost my hearing I thought of Mead. She was why I decided that my disability was an opportunity to learn sign language. Only then would I understand the new culture I found myself in. by @pinnygrylls

@samuelrcrane and I did some @project.1961 research today @framelessldn -enjoyed @immersivearts_uk The Whale and had lots of ideas about where we want to go next with our work. Some reflections on immersive work :-Story is everything otherwise it’s wallpaper -Allow audiences to play-Passive is sometimes more immersive than active. -Interactivity can happen in the imagination if you allow space for that to happen- performers must have a way to relate to the projection as it’s the in the connection between the two that interesting things happen otherwise it’s not hybrid just backdrop by @pinnygrylls
