I was invited to sing the National Anthem at Friday’s Orange County Soccer Club game against FC Tulsa (5/13 at 7:00 PM). As an added bonus, the team will be celebrating my teenage punk rock heroes, Social Distortion, with a special honor. Even though my hair is now a bit shorter, I promise to recreate at least one of the following photos during my performance. If you are free, come celebrate Orange County with us. I’ve never shared this story.

For many years, including during law school, I worked as an instructor at the Apple Store in Century City, CA. Early one morning, Sidney Poitier (or “Mr. P,” as he later asked me to call him) walked in and asked if I could explain what made Apple a special company. I shared my thoughts. He then asked if I might be interested in helping him learn about the ways technology was helping to shape the future. We weren’t allowed to give private lessons, but how could I say no? Thus began an improbable, close friendship between us. I visited Mr. P at his home many times. I was lucky to see his famous Oscar and all the other awards he earned during his long and brilliant career. We talked about technology, for sure, but he also took a deep interest in me. He applauded my decision to go to law school and he cheered when we welcomed our first son. In fact, the second image shows a gift he sent Remy, which we will always cherish. When last we spoke, he invited us to celebrate Remy’s birthday at Disneyland, as his guests (he was on the company’s board).

I’ll never forget when he quietly and emotionally told me about learning to read as an adult, while washing dishes, so he could audition for a theater production in Harlem, New York (his first acting role). He said a waiter taught him, using newspapers. I was speechless, experiencing a living history.
