One thing I really enjoy doing is finding usefulness in otherwise discarded materials. Call it eclectic. Call it resourceful. Call it stewardship. It’s just how I do things. It’s not really even a conscious thing for me. I don’t try to do it. It just happens.
And that’s what happened with this one. I call it the 7-Shot Set. I had the midsection of a 16 gage shotgun barrel left over from a previous project. It felt like it was begging to become something. So when a client desired to have seven stack billiards made, it just felt like an opportunity.
Filling the eighth chamber, I made a pipe tool that appears to be a shotgun shell

You want to hear the best part? The client, unbeknownst to me, was a junior Olympic skeet shooter. How cool is that?

Today on The Storied Outdoors, we’re joined by Grant Batson, craftsman, pipe maker, guitar maker, fly fisherman, and founder of Batson Made. Grant has spent his life learning the language of wood, following its grain, respecting its character, and patiently transforming rough pieces of material into objects of beauty and lasting value.
In a culture increasingly defined by speed, convenience, and disposable things, Grant’s work offers a different way of seeing. His story is one of craftsmanship, patience, and the conviction that making something well matters. We talk about the childhood experiences and mentors that shaped his imagination, the common thread connecting his guitars, furniture, and pipes, and the moment craftsmanship became more than a hobby and began to feel like a calling. #thestoriedoutdoors #flyfishing #pipemaking by @grantbatson
