On May 10, 1876, President Grant opened the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition, which was the first world’s fair held in the United States. In his remarks, the president observed, “One hundred years ago our country was new and but partially settled.” But even though the young nation had to start from scratch in building the bare essentials, it achieved enough in one century that it was “rivalling older and more advanced nations in law, medicine, and theology; in science, literature, philosophy and the fine arts.” by @grants_tomb

Today is First Lady Julia Dent Grant's 200th birthday! Julia Dent Grant Day is being commemorated in proclamations & other special messages issued by states in which Mrs. Grant lived, the District of Columbia, and living first ladies. You can read them here: bit.ly/3ZkaXRj.

Born in St. Louis on January 26, 1826, Mrs. Grant would go on to become one of the three longest-serving first ladies prior to Eleanor Roosevelt. Even before becoming first lady, she demonstrated her dedication to her husband, Ulysses, and her country. During the Civil War, she was a steady source of support to her husband. She joined her husband in the White House between 1869 and 1877 and was a particularly active and popular first lady. She had the White House refurbished extensively, including the family quarters, executive quarters, and a grand makeover of the East Room that made it one of the most celebrated interiors of the time. She met with cabinet members, senators, and Supreme Court justices; attended Senate hearings; and read the president’s mail. She also showed remarkable growth. She had grown up in a slaveholding family and relied upon the labor of enslaved people prior to the war. But her husband’s presidency broke new ground for voting and civil rights for former slaves, and Mrs. Grant directed that her public receptions at the White House be open to everyone regardless of race or class.

Following her husband’s retirement from the presidency, Mrs. Grant accompanied him on a storied two-and-a-half-year trip around the world. She served as a virtual good-will ambassador for the U.S. during those travels and enjoyed a warm reception in foreign countries, a reflection of the unprecedented standing of our country. Mrs. Grant was also the first first lady to write her memoirs, published posthumously.

This bicentennial is a fitting occasion to celebrate the memory of Mrs. Grant. While the snow necessitated a postponement, we look forward to marking this milestone at a ceremony at Grant's Tomb on Sunday, 2/1 (details at bit.ly/3ZkaXRj). Let us recognize this model citizen's service to her country during one of the most critical and formative periods in American history. by @grants_tomb

Please note that due to inclement weather, our Julia Dent Grant bicentennial ceremony, originally scheduled for 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 26, has been postponed to Sunday, Feb. 1, at 1 p.m. (Note the change in the start time as well as the new date.) As before, the ceremony will be an indoor event, but since the heater inside the Tomb is broken, please dress as if the event were held outdoors. Fortunately, the heater at the visitor center across the street from the Tomb is still working, and it is there that we will have cake and refreshments starting at 2 p.m., followed by the slideshow presentation on Julia Grant's life.

Monday, January 26, 2026, marks First Lady Julia Dent Grant’s 200th birthday!

The Grant Monument Association (GMA) invites you to mark the occasion at Grant’s Tomb. The commemoration will also feature messages from America’s first ladies, period music, and the laying of wreaths. After the ceremony concludes, cake and refreshments will be provided by the GMA at the visitor center across the street from Grant’s Tomb. GMA president Frank Scaturro will follow at the visitor center with a slideshow presentation on Julia Grant’s life.
