I took a trip to North Jersey with @dewrattanas to photograph the moon rising behind Riverside Church in Manhattan. After planning our shot, the moon started to rise to the left of the church and behind this beautiful structure. I admit I didn’t know what it was but I adjusted my camera and started shooting. I later learned it was Grant’s Tomb, the final resting place of Ulysses S. Grant and his wife Julia. I continued to get shots as the moon rose towards our intended target. I’d love to return to get a direct alignment with Grant’s Tomb.

Ulysses S. Grant is the one U.S. president permanently laid to rest in New York City. At one point, his tomb was the most popular tourist attraction in New York City, even above the Statue of Liberty! We discuss the urgent need to restore General Grant National Memorial in Manhattan, the final resting place of President Ulysses S. Grant and his wife Julia. We explore why Grant matters today and his fight for equality, human dignity, and the liberation of enslaved people. We then reveal the shocking state of disrepair the monument has fallen into, including water damage, mold, lead paint, and failing infrastructure. We call on viewers to contact their representatives to push the federal government to appropriate funds for restoration, emphasizing that honoring Grant’s legacy of preserving the Union and ending slavery is essential to understanding who we are as a nation. General Grant deserves better!
