You seem to believe that the Modernist typographic norms such as grid-obsessed order and clarity are repressing the possibilities for other more authentic, spontaneous alternatives here. You would be relieved, then, to know that they do not. Modernism has never been prevalent in Korean graphic design—neither as an idea nor as a concrete reality. Very few Korean designers we know take Modernism seriously. If Max Bill or Emil Ruder came back to life here and saw our visual landscape, they would be horrified by the messiness. Please don’t worry: South Korea has never been Modern, and it might never be.
[...]
PS. We often think that when you are concerned with now in the West, we in the other parts of the world are stuck with here. Your Modernists are always worried about anachronism: “does this work belong to our times?” We are asked if our work truly belongs to Korea. We don’t know, and we don’t care. But we do care if we are responding to today’s challenges, including subtle aesthetic and technical questions but also more urgent issues that we mentioned above. Some of them are near-universal challenges that require global responses. So, please do not ask us to remain as Korean while you battle as children of our times: we, too, are on the same front line.

Futuress is an online magazine and community space for design politics. They understand design as an expansive social and political practice, examining the objects, systems, and structures that shape our lived realities. A queer intersectional feminist platform, Futuress strives to be a home for the histories, people, and perspectives that have been—and still often remain—underrepresented, oppressed, and ignored. www.futuress.org

MMS are Maryam Fanni, Matilda Flodmark and Sara Kaaman. They form a research collective based in Stockholm, Sweden, focusing on investigations and writings on visual culture, graphic design and historiography through feminist theory and practice. In 2020 their book Natural Enemies of Books: A Messy History of Women in Typography and Printing was published by Occasional Papers. The book is a response to the groundbreaking 1937 North-American publication Bookmaking on the Distaff Side, which brought together contributions by women printers, illustrators, authors, typographers and typesetters.
In this issue of GRAPHIC, MMS share materials from their process and research archive, facsimiles of publications from their library, along with answering some questions posed by journalist Madeleine Morley.

2020년에는 비영리 출판사 오케이저널 페이퍼스(Occasional Papers)를 통해 <책의 천적들: 타이포그래피·인쇄업계 여성들의 어수선한 역사>(Natural Enemies of Books: A Messy History of Women in Typography and Printing)를 펴냈다.

I found Bookmaking on the Distaff Side in 2010 at the online exhibition catalogue of Unseen Hands – Women Printers, Binders and Book-designers organised by Rebecca Warren Davidson at Princeton University Library in 2003, where it was presented as a “showcase for the contributions of women to printing and the book arts.” I had received a grant to research women within the printing industry, so I decided to investigate the book further. I found a copy for sale online, at the rare book shop Oak Knoll, and the table of content looked really interesting. I had to use all of the grant, 8000 SEK, to be able to get my hands on it. And I had no idea of what I was buying! But it turned out to be an amazing object. Apart from the various contributions, essays, testimonies, poems and so on, every signature is printed by different private presses. The book becomes a catalogue or collage, or as book historian Kathleen Walkup describes it– a pot-luck, of various typefaces, paper qualities and printmaking techniques.

This year Graphic Magazine reached out to me with the somewhat assumptive provocation, “Which black designers have inspired you?” It is a topic that, in one form or another, keeps coming back to me. Back in 2018 at Reading University’s MA Type Design course, the late Gerard Unger asked me, “where are all the black type designers?”
Two years later and a lot has changed. I have now graduated, moved to Manchester, set up a studio and busied myself with developing my practice. I’ve drawn from many sources this year, but I have not been inspired by any black type designers. Perhaps you’re thinking, “we just need more black type designers!” Well, to that I answer, yes and no.
It is a well known fact, that there is lack of diversity in our profession. However, I believe the current statistical skew is merely an indicator of latent deficiencies within many societal and corporate structures. Until we can provide strategic support to the under-represented, they will continue to be just that. Whilst successful black professionals may be a real source of inspiration, I find the concept a little too close to that of the role model or perhaps something worse than that; celebrity...
