Last Friday I had the pleasure to be invited by Pete from Liverpool John Moores University @ljmu @graphics_ljmu to give a talk for the Graphic Design & Illustration programme. I was excited to be the first speaker for the Visual Communication Cultures module this semester! 📒🌳

The course covers creative practices such as Play, Craft and Community, which really resonate with the art approaches I’ve been exploring these years. Besides sharing my journey towards becoming a mixed-media artist and illustrator (including how my academic background in industrial design and critical design continues to influence my practice!), I also shared a few projects connected to some of the module’s themes, including climate crisis and emerging technologies.

♥️ It was super lovely meeting the students, and I hope they found the talk useful! Thank you again Pete and LJMU for having me. (Also very excited to speak at the John Lennon Art & Design Building ✨)

We are hosting an exciting exhibition next week of work-in progress by our PhD students, Abbas Mteirek.

Abbas’s practice-led PhD project is based on a tension experienced between how he speaks and how he writes in his own dialect - the Lebanese Arabic. The project explores whether the logic and philosophy of Hangul (the Korean alphabet) can help rethink how Lebanese dialect could be written.

The exhibition presents the culmination of practical experiments from the first 18 months of research, including a featural glyph system for unwritten Lebanese Arabic phonemes.

Bridges Between Arabic & Hangul
by Abbas Mteirek.

Opening: Tuesday 16 June, 1pm – 3pm. All welcome.

The exhibition will remain open until Friday 19 June, 10am to 5pm. by @graphics_ljmu
