@gratefuldangle was born from my love of Grateful Dead music. I first fell in love with the Grateful Dead because I found the album “Reckoning” on sale in the local Hastings in Santa Fe. I didn’t know much about the band so assumed they played a lot of acoustic music. When I went to college, my world exploded and my new friends shared shows with me and it quickly became clear that this is something I would love my entire life.

Learning more about the music came with learning more about the band, and by default, the fans. My parents were not Deadheads, but my dad is a huge fan of music and introduced me to tons of amazing, unique artists growing up. He could never love the Dead, but I’ve always tried! But recently I was playing some Dead & Company for him, trying to coax him into the electric energy of a Dear Mr Fantasy (he loves Traffic) or a Morning Dew…he told me he was just happy I could love something this much and that “loving music like that is like learning a language. You’re so thrilled to know when someone else speaks it.” As Jerry said, the Grateful Dead are like licorice. If you like licorice, you really like licorice.

When I found out Bobby died, like many people, I wept. It still makes me sad to know he’s gone. How could I feel so raw about someone I had never personally met? Bobby was up there reminding us that that only thing we are supposed to do in life is chase our passions. To work at it. To show up.

That’s what I love about the Grateful Dead. Or, one of the many things I love. As deadheads we are creators, we create experiences and community and we love to follow the music. To keep it in our bones. As Donna said “it’s yours, baby”

I first got into making earrings because I’ve always loved wearing them but had no idea how to do it. But I’ve found that I especially love creating them as a way to connect the music to experience and love…everything the Dead have given me 🌹💀⚡️ give @gratefuldangle a follow…hit me up for some dangles or a sweet tshirt…see you on shakedown 🥲 (lol or the local market in fernie on sundays at terry nelsons booth iykyk) by @gratefuldangle

It’s been a year since the 60th anniversary of the Grateful Dead. GD60 was definitely the lightning strike on the calendar for 2025. It reminded us also that it’s been now over a year that we’ve had the tie dyes, earrings, and shirt designs going…and recently we were even selling at the local farmers market! I found myself explaining the designs to people…. Fishing, Fernie, Grateful Dead, Music, Skiing, Snowboarding, Friends and Family. It’s the magic of the Grateful Dead universe, a world where people build: community and energy and friends and good times. We miss you Bobby!!

The music of the Grateful Dead is more than just music for me. It’s like food for the soul.

Losing Bobby was hard. Not because we thought he’d love forever, but because, selfishly, he gave so much to so many for so many years through his music that I personally have come to lean on it in a way that feels like learning and speaking another language. A language that is like a blanket. Knowing he was gone, knowing we wouldn’t get to hear him play again felt extremely sad. It’s hard to explain how someone who you never met could feel like that.

I made these earrings just after he passed. They are for a friend…but one night while I was making them I got to run outside the backcountry lodge where I was and see the northern lights dancing up above us. The earrings remind me of the northern lights…I didn’t even realize it at the time…

And in that moment I was overcome with emotion …the way in which we experience life really changes day to day. And it also reminded me that I am so lucky to love the Dead in such a way that these songs feel like my secret ability to cope and to feel and to want more out of life.

Here’s to the next 300 years…May the music never stop 💓✨ by @gratefuldangle

✨Grateful Dangle: Donna Edition✨
Donna Jean was the original diva. I love that Donna just went right up to Jerry and said, “My husband should be in your band.” Icon behavior.

As much as I love the Grateful Dead, I can’t imagine what it was like to be the only woman in that scene. I don’t think most people meant to be hurtful—but where there’s power, there’s power over people.

A friend recently said that everyone in the Dead sounded chopped at some point—and it’s true. People can be hard on Donna, but not nearly as hard on the others. Nothing’s perfect; that’s where the beauty lives. Your favorite show couldn’t exist without a few that didn’t quite land.

You can’t deny the guts it took for her to show up, sing her heart out, and be seen in a scene that probably saw her as “just a pretty face.” Donna added sparkle, depth, and that touch of something extra that made the 70s Dead shimmer.

Here’s to you, Donna. I’m sad you weren’t at GD60—but your voice is forever in the sound. 🌹⚡️

✨ For sale: “Wheelin’” ✨ SOLD! 😻
A little nod to my Mission in the Rain earrings. Same flowy feel, new abstract twist. I stumbled on these pale purple beads and instantly felt something delicate yet strong in them (ugh… just like life 🙃).

And because I can’t resist a good Hunter lyric:

“The wheel is turning and you can’t slow down,
You can’t let go and you can’t hold on…”

Life lately has been a whole lot of that.
Baseball agrees. The Blue Jays know.
Turns out everything is urgent, random, painful, and joyful — all at once.

If I’m overreaching, forgive me.
But never forget:

“You can’t go back and you can’t stand still.”

Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo Tie Dye

For centuries cultures have used the “river” as a metaphor for crossing over into the unknown or passing on to the other side. One day we all have to take our turn, putting down the rod and wade across into the stars.

Jerry Garcia was in a horrible car crash in 1960 with three friends. He was thrown from the car right out of his shoes..

Jerry Garcia: “One guy [Paul Speegle] in the group did die. It was like losing the golden boy, the one who had the most to offer. For me, it was crushing, but I had the feeling that my life had been spared to do something ... not to take any bullshit, to either go whole hog or not at all.
... That was when my life began. Before that, I had been living at less than capacity.”

“I lost my boots in transit, babe A pile of smoking leather Nailed a retread to my feet and prayed for better weather”

Vassar Clements plays violin 🎻 on the studio recording giving it a distinctive bluegrass-jazz flavor. A rare occurrence.

Studio recording: Wake of the Flood (November 15, 1973
First performance: July 16, 1972, at Dillon Stadium in Hartford, Connecticut.

Throwing Stones Tie Dye 🌏

Before there were roads there were rivers. They connect everything on the planet. Countless species of plants, animals, fish and yes us mammals depend on these watery highways for fresh water and biodiversity. The Elk River is our tiny little stretch of waterway. Let’s keep it clean and demand the highest of standards from nearby resource companies and politicians. It’s our river to lose…. 🌳🏞️

Bob Weir has been singing Throwing Stones since he wrote it in 1982 with John Barlow. Studio recording: In the Dark, July 6th 1987. 🌱

Over the years he’s changed the lyrics to reflect current events on the planet and how government affects our environment. Most recently at the Dead and Company shows in Las Vegas the song is paired with striking visuals that relay a strong message. Not known to talk into microphone during concerts. Bob Weir lets the song do its thing. 🎵 “The future’s here we are it…. We are on our own!!!”🎶

“A peaceful place, or so it looks from space
Closer look reveals the human race
Full of hope, full of grace is the human face But afraid we may lay our home to waste” 🌎 Thank you !! @bobweir

Drums Tie Dye

On the river, everything has a beat. The ebbs and flows of the current mixed with the vibrations of nature is life itself. You become your own conductor as you cast the fly rod with rhythm 🥁 and hope to sync up with the water. 💀 🌹 🪘

Early 1970s: Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann (the “Rhythm Devils”) began expanding their percussion improvisations in live shows. These often appeared in the second set, growing looser and more experimental. By 1978 Drums and Space were included in the second set and became a permanent part of the Grateful Dead performance.

If you think about it… Rave, Drum and Bass and EDM owe some of its roots to Mickey Hart. He still performs Drums and Space with inspiring passion to this day and his art is displayed in galleries. Thanks!!! @mickeyhart
