No Ladders for Monkeys, 140x120cm, oil on canvas, 2026.

The man, around sixty, former hippie,
a “classico” tanned sugar daddy who knew roughly all the local elite, climbed into his huge truck—taller than long—and the ascent to the perched cab consisted of a pull-up bars course suspended in midair like paramilitary commandos training exercises. He and others left on foot. I had no idea why I was finding myself on climbing these horrifically dangerous things, hanging on like a crippled monkey, when a ladder was right there. Beside doesn’t matter, why I was getting into that damn truck?

Last week to check out In Den Himmel @pictura_dordrecht. In the installation, Jan @welzenis_ and Arjan @janssen_arjan have opted for an approach that is both silent, highlighting the eloquent solitude of the works, and discursive, revealing their slow and gradual proximity to one another. These two artist-curators handled everything themselves: the organization, the truck transport from the Netherlands, and the installation. Quite remarkable, and worth mentioning. Huge thanks! And then the surprise of seeing my incredible friends Yvette @yvettevandenboogaard and Philipp @philippdonald come all the way from Germany for the occasion. If you’re in the area, stop by before it closes.

Flushing Cobbles Blues, 140x120cm, oil on canvas, 2026.
The alignment of underlying pinkish-orange rectangles was as much a way of soiling the canvas as of erasing the image(s), by covering them with blue and brown paint (wet on wet), and also of enabling the conditions of a particular place taken at once.
Vertically, from the center, the canvas of the two adjacent planes is almost entirely torn: the upper half pulled downwards, the lower half upwards, thus reversing the planes. This implies several points to consider before cutting (the width of the central vertical strip (positive part after the cut) for example, which must not only have a role to conceal the bar, but also gives a sense of scale, rhythm, distribution of colors…)
In retrospect, I was very irritated by those underlying rectangles, their arbitrary placement, and the idea of composition behind. But, after a second reading, a potential critique of the color field struck me as interesting.

IN DEN HIMMEL, opening / 06.06.2026 / 16:00 @pictura_dordrecht, an incredible art space in NL. Curated by the wonderful @welzenis_ alias @__barbara_ , @janssen_arjan and Ad van Rosmalen. @abstracte_nl

(Very short)excerpt from the press release by Ad van Rosmalen:

“...It is possible to assert, as I did previously in the context of the ABSTRACTE exhibitions, that abstraction is an essential cognitive capacity, a thought process that arises involuntarily in everyone, faced with the multitude of things, the meanings of actions, and the continuous flow of thoughts. All these elements can be connected through abstraction. But this is a functional answer, stemming from the fact that the capacity to abstract engenders abstraction, quite simply because it can. And because it can, people do it; because it can, artists create abstract works. The question finds its answer: the abstract work exists because it can.

50 MV space @50__mv

In Waterloo, Liverpool

Opening Saturday 13th June 6-8pm

So happy to be invited by James @bacchiandreoli and Luke @luke_skiffington and to be part of it.

Zaum! brings together contemporary artists who continue to explore new directions in abstraction.
Zaum! takes its name from an experimental language that breaks the limits of written and spoken word, first used in the 1913 Russian Futurist opera Victory over the Sun.

Rejecting grammar and fixed meaning, Zaum embraces chance and disorder to open new creative possibilities. Also, Malevich’s Black Square first appeared on the stage

curtain of the opera, marking a shift towards spontaneous, uncodified abstraction—where colour and form communicate beyond logic. Meaning was reshaped through

rupture and reinvention, balancing not knowing with deliberate action.

Of those oafs who keep you stuck at home.

Open range’n fences (diptych), 140x120cm oil on canvas, wool yarn and 53x37cm, lacquer green paint on wood and canvas, 2026.

An artist had sculpted a life-size butterfly and a monumental moth in white marble. It was admirable.
I would never be able to one day carve a large moth and a life-size butterfly in white marble. Upon waking: « Hum…a tiny butterfly and a giant big size moth, is that really what you want to do achieve?!”

Le mariage du poisson rouge (Red fish’s wedding), 140x120cm, acrylic (slate grey on the middle part) and oil on canvas, 2026.
I usually start painting blindly, unsure of the outcome, since it only reveals itself once the front and back surfaces come together. But particularly here, where the beginning wasn’t driven by a clear decision. I first poured beige paint only to “dirty” the canvas and get rid of the silly tension of the “blank page”, after many weeks without painting.
Splashes, stains, marks and arbitrary gestures hadn’t prepared me for this balance (verticality/ pictorial image ratio), once the two strips of canvas were torn and tilted forward.
Some adjustments were necessary.
