spinning wild wool:

last month, during my travels, i found myself compelled to work only with what materials i could beg, borrow or scavenge on that mysterious, remote island.

this video is an attempt to document my process over that short week !

with the sheep having been shorn a month before our arrival, i resorted to hiking around the island picking up wool wherever i could find it - trod into the fields, stuck in the bracken, picked out of fences and stone ruins.

after a good wash, and without any of my own wool processing tools at hand, i combed this feral fleece first with teasels, then (after giving up on that) a fork.

the loan of a spindle from our amazing teacher @ellyanehutchinson allowed me to spin the yarn that eventually became my contribution to our community textile project — the crocheted collar worn on top of the cape (thanks to @hotgrrrlmaeg and @daisybow_craft for the footage of my last minute crocheting with my skirt hiked up to my ass, and the finished piece, respectively).

this fairy-tale experiment still hasn’t fully unraveled itself to me — i’m honestly not sure why i felt so possessed by this specific mission — but it has revitalized my desire to keep studying, working with, and prioritizing wool as the central material of my current art practice.

DURATIONS: Meredith Graves & Offal Literary Salon present Philosophy and Magic with Simon Critchley, Elvia Wilk, Joseph Earl Thomas, Sasha Ravitch

Magic, like philosophy, can be perfidious: it hides in plain sight, it re-writes systems of thinking, and it redesigns ways of being. Philosophy and the Occult Sciences are as much about concealing as they are revealing, and knowing when to do which. The true seat of power within any system is occupied by those individuals tasked with deciding who gets to see in the dark, who has access to the hidden tongues, what lies in wait on the Otherside – and perhaps most of all, by those who understand the two disciplines as perpetual strange bedfellows, at origin a monstrous two-headed birth still fighting any attempt at division well into the 21st century.

This year at Durations, in a special clandestine meeting of the Offal Salon, we aim to place a candle in front of a trick scrying mirror: four luminous writers from across genres and disciplinary specialties, whose work simultaneously conceals and reveals the inner workings [in/of] [the/a] machine, whether mechanical or human, with or without organs.

Join us on the evening of Friday November 13th for a series of individual readings followed by spirited conversation, and help us dissolve the lines between philosophy and magic, fiction and non-, meat and spirit. by @gravesmeredith

It’s WIP Wednesday again baby it’s me your scary godmother back with another round of time traveling projects in peculiar color choices let’s go Funk Flex airhorns rock and roll McDonalds etc.

Since we last spoke, I finished all the projects from my previous videos AND gave my talk on textile arts in magical history at @salemwitchfest — which is now up on their website in the archives and available for download if you missed it but still want to watch me babble about my special interest for over an hour (with slides!).

(I also turned 39!!! a few weeks back, and am feeling more committed than ever to not using filters or other camera trickery to hide it. Getting older absolutely rules, do not let them lie to you.)

Details!

- The Golden Eagle “Seawaves” jumper: original pattern available on archive.org and in the book I’m holding, ‘Knitting Fashions of the 1940s: Style, Patterns and History’ by Jane Waller. The yarn is Scout from @kelbournewoolens - a well-known all time favorite of mine - in two new colors, Almond and Pear. This was a very generous gift from Kelbourne, and the first time a yarn company has ever reached out to me 🥹😭 so I’m extra moved and excited to use it.

- The Jojo Sweater by @susancrawfordvintage: adapted from the classic ‘Lavenda Rainbow Jumper,’ with so many new size, length, structure and color options it’s literally a 26-page PDF now. Made in 7 random leftover bits of sock and fingering from my stash and @bichesetbuches lambswool fingering for the MC, picked up at @brooklyngeneralstore . I will post the FULL, tedious details on this once it’s finished.

That’s a wrap on @salemwitchfest for another beautiful year, which means I can finally reveal my big silly secret: for the past six months I’ve been hand knitting (and crocheting!) the outfit I wore to give my lecture, “A Stitch In Time: The Magical History of Traditional Textile Arts,” shown in the first two photos. I promised some folks pattern and yarn info, and that is as follows:

Top: Homefront Jumper DK @squidneyknits / @kelbournewoolens Scout
Skirt: De-Lovely Skirt @squidneyknits / @knit_picks Wool of the Andes Sport
Hat: Marin Hat @le_pull_le_pull / leftover Scout
Bag: Birkin 35 @thatcrochetguy / big box cotton I am not naming because it sucked to work with

Honestly, this was a ludicrous side quest and I’m still completely shocked and delighted I pulled it off, especially after hurting my wrist and losing a month of working time.

Thank you so much to everyone who rallied at 10 AM for my class; I never expected that many people to show up, online or in person, and I’m totally humbled and awed by your kindness and enthusiasm.

The rest of the photos are some of the scant handful I took while in Salem, a place where I’m so in the moment and so surrounded by love and camaraderie that I barely touch my phone throughout. It was, as it always is, an honor, pleasure and privilege to be included, and to spend the week in the company of the smartest, most inspiring people I know. Today on TCI 🐌 Herbalist and author Rachelle Robinett (@rachellerobinett) speaks with multimedia artist, musician, and independent scholar Meredith Graves (@gravesmeredith) about the romance of your discipline, the power of place, and learning to think for yourself. Read the interview via the link in our bio. 🌾

ID: Quotes from a conversation with herbalist and author Rachelle Robinett that read...

Slide 1: “I dramatically changed my life in the last few years. I left my career, I left my city, I left my country, I left a marriage, I left my home. My family wasn’t close, but I’ve left them in that country.”

Slide 2: “I left so much that at some point here I was like, I’m not sure if my name is still Rachelle. I let myself be stripped bare.”

Slide 3: “It was a dramatic rebalancing, and it was a rebalancing that left me with more of the life-giving essentials, period. Less of the rest.”

Slide 4: “I really, really like to teach people how to think for themselves. We need some essentials, some foundation, in order to stand upon and from there, be able to navigate a bit more intuitively.”

Slide 5: “With education, I hope there is also always the empowerment piece, which is the encouragement to explore this world as yourself and learn more that way. I think it’s a balance.”

Slide 6: “Purpose—that’s one of the keys. What are we getting out of bed every day for? How are we spending our time every day? Where is our energy going? Is that what we believe, what we know, is most important for us to be happy?”

Slide 7: “There’s so much denial there. It takes a lot of courage to live in alignment with that knowledge, which I think we all do have. We may just not know it.”

Slide 8: “I always recommend that everybody start with as much self-reflection as possible.” by @gravesmeredith

Public Records x Wooden Spoon Herbs 🌿 The second in our series of culinary and beverage collaborations this summer season, we welcome Lauren Haynes [@laurensherbgarden], founder of @woodenspoonherbs for a pop-up rooted in plant-based ritual, food, and drink.

Inspired by late-summer traditions and the spirit of Lammas, the experience draws on themes of abundance, nourishment, and seasonal transition. Guided by Lauren’s intuitive approach to herbalism, plant magic comes to life through a menu shaped by what is growing now, at its peak.

Working with local farms and growers, sun-ripened fruits, herbs, flowers, and grains are woven into a series of dishes and drinks that feel both vibrant and grounding. Each offering highlights the connection between the land, the body, and the moment.

the only thing better than getting to observe the way meredith graves moves through the world - a mooring lighthouse of hope in the maelstrom of end times propaganda - is getting to be such close friends with her. a bright, gentle force of good, always fierce at the right moment. a person i love so much that i am using steely dan audio just because i know it will make her smile. we are so lucky to have her as a guest reader for offal ii. the silver lining of brooklyn intelligentsia; a guerilla para academic par excellence.

Meredith Graves is a multimedia artist, writer and independent scholar based in Brooklyn, New York. She has been a passionate student of magic since 1999 and a dedicated reader of philosophy since 2005, finding her ‘small plots of new land’ in the overlap. Over the preceding 38 years she has been - in no particular order - the overnight cleaner for a bakery, stitcher for a university theater, townie bartender, the host of MTV News, personal assistant to a schizophrenic Yorkie breeder, freelance journalist, event coordinator, chainmail apprentice, dishwasher, Outreach Director at Kickstarter, farmhand, and more. She currently teaches knitting in South Brooklyn, and can be found online at @gravesmeredith. by @gravesmeredith

That’s right, I’m finally following through on my threat to start playing with video content. Here’s an astoundingly goofy #wipwednesday from the someone who ran out the door to catch the bus and left her knitting on the chair at home — but you can’t deny the splendor of my strawbebbies.

Thanks to my very cool bosses for letting me keep a container garden in front of the shop this year 🤍🧶🍅 taken in Argyle Textile by @gravesmeredith
