This year’s festival programming grows a new culinary branch: “Remember, We Are Born In The Garden,” a two-part exploration of the landscapes, ingredients, and evolving food systems of the American Northeast with @breadtreefarms.

On Wednesday, 11.15, Public Records x Breadtree Farms will explore the possibilities of perennial agriculture and the role of trees in shaping a more resilient regional food system. Join us at 6 PM UPSTAIRS for a conversation with Breadtree + @gravesmeredith before heading to The Atrium for a taste of what this collaboration is all about.

Across more than 800 acres in the Hudson Valley and Vermont, Breadtree is transforming former conventional dairy fields into productive agroforestry landscapes, integrating nut and fruit trees, grazing animals, and diverse plant communities. Their work extends beyond cultivation, bringing together growers, researchers, and food producers to understand the potential of crops such as chestnuts, hickory nuts, and acorns in the future of Northeastern agriculture.

Through our collaborative menu, we’ll tell the story of an evolving food landscape, looking at how chestnuts, woodland nuts, orchard fruits, wild plants, and regional botanicals can shape a more diverse and resilient food culture.

Together, we’ll move closer toward understanding how a deeper relationship with the plants, landscapes, and agricultural practices of the Northeast can inform what we grow, how we eat, and the future of regional food systems.

DURATIONS: Meredith Graves & Offal Literary Salon present Philosophy and Magic with Simon Critchley, Elvia Wilk, Joseph Earl Thomas, Sasha Ravitch

Magic, like philosophy, can be perfidious: it hides in plain sight, it re-writes systems of thinking, and it redesigns ways of being. Philosophy and the Occult Sciences are as much about concealing as they are revealing, and knowing when to do which. The true seat of power within any system is occupied by those individuals tasked with deciding who gets to see in the dark, who has access to the hidden tongues, what lies in wait on the Otherside – and perhaps most of all, by those who understand the two disciplines as perpetual strange bedfellows, at origin a monstrous two-headed birth still fighting any attempt at division well into the 21st century.

This year at Durations, in a special clandestine meeting of the Offal Salon, we aim to place a candle in front of a trick scrying mirror: four luminous writers from across genres and disciplinary specialties, whose work simultaneously conceals and reveals the inner workings [in/of] [the/a] machine, whether mechanical or human, with or without organs.

Join us on the evening of Friday November 13th for a series of individual readings followed by spirited conversation, and help us dissolve the lines between philosophy and magic, fiction and non-, meat and spirit.

Saying good-bye to August 🔥

What a wild month. A solar return. A Salem Witch Fest. A successful sale. So many good things packed into so little time. Some highlights….

Getting to spend time w my friend @kitchentoad & @hausofophidious in Salem was a treat. Bouncing to the pier, to the Flea, local cemeteries. We were annoyed that this rosary picture had all the pieces glued on and wasn’t just a display for cool Catholic goods.

Experiencing @thedeathwitch’s ritual at Antilux: the Witch House. The energy was heavy, palpable, gorgeous, deep - you could feel She was in the room with us. Antilux rituals knock it out of the park every year, and this year was potent. Honored to be walking w/ this amazing human. 🥀

Saying hello to the full moon, saying goodbye to the sirens and local water spirits, sitting and yapping and talking. It was such a gift to be close to the water again - I grew up on the East Coast, and one of the biggest things I miss in Denver is the ocean.

Another year, another Salem Witchcraft & Folklore Festival!

After a little period of recovery from so many festivities, I’m reflecting on what a joy it was to see family and pals, a delight to make some new friends, an honour to present my class on working with dead magicians, and a privilege to throw some shapes at the Black Cat Cabaret.

Along the way, and in between some amazing classes, I guested on a film panel, and took folks on a merry jaunt round a local place of the dead to talk cemetery etiquette and folk necromancy with my dear colleagues Professor Charles Porterfield and Jesse Hathaway-Diaz.

It was especially wonderful to spend some time with my sister Harriet who came all the way over from Old Blighty to present her class. Check out her work over at @harriet_cummins_conjure if you haven’t already!

It was also a particularly great, as always, to hang out with my dear conjuring cousins of the Hanson-Porterfield Root & Fruit Legacy. Us dodgy folk magicians have to stick together after all. I definitely saw that @prof.porterfield transform into a coyote and pee on a townie one night when he thought no was looking though, so, watch out for that one...

My immense gratitudes to the SWFF organisers for putting on another fantastic festival, and to all who attended and helped make it a truly brilliant week.

It’s an honor to return and present this topic for your generous, inspiring, and thoughtful community. And thanks to @aquarianism for being a kind and patient TA in my room this year. 🖤

Thanks to everyone who hugged me and asked me amazing historical and theological questions during my session this year. Yall make my H9 Gemini Mars spirit sing. 🎶

Having such an engaged and curious group in my room is worth the months of schlepping to university libraries and worrying JSTOR with how many pdfs I’ve downloaded in a single hour. You’re all the absolute best and I could’ve stayed talking with you easily for another hour if you’d let me. 🫂
