Meet our newest garden resident! 🐛 Monarch caterpillars can only eat milkweed, and narrow-leaf milkweed (Asclepias fascicularis) is native right here in the Bay Area. Soon this little one will spin a chrysalis and emerge as a butterfly. 🦋 Want to help monarchs? Plant native milkweed and skip the pesticides. 🌱

Why native? Narrow-leaf milkweed dies back in winter, but non-native tropical milkweed stays green all year. That winter dormancy matters: it nudges Western monarchs to migrate to their coastal overwintering sites instead of staying put and breeding through the cold months. 🍂

New pantry is up ✨ Built from reclaimed odds and ends with some help from my dad (last photo) — free, loved, and full of miscellany whimsical craft.

The OG one was a Jack London street score that ran a solid 6 years before calling it. This one took about 18 hours across three days to piece together.
It was originally headed to a new garden plot, but that project's on pause — and this pantry collapsed.. so it found a home here instead.

There's something about handmade things that carry the maker with them. When that lands in a community space, it hits different, fuller.

If you've read this far, remember to say hi to a neighbor that you may not have said hello to before. We all go through times where having even the support of a kind gesture leans our day towards the better.

today, 10 amazing students from Head-Royce volunteered with UCP at the Oakland Urban Farming Project Gravity Garden and helped build out a new compost area at a community urban farm that sits on land that was once an illegal dumping hotspot, which honestly represents exactly where we see this movement heading because while policy change, enforcement, cameras, and accountability all matter and are part of the long term fight, beautification and community activation are some of the fastest and most powerful forms of deterrence we have when abandoned lots become gardens, gathering spaces, and places people actually care about, it becomes much harder for dumpers to treat neighborhoods like landfills and much easier for communities to take pride and ownership in their environment. this collaboration feels like the beginning of something really special because transforming cities is not just about removing trash, it’s about creating spaces that people actually want to protect! #transformation #urbancompassionproject #oakland #urbangarden #urbanfarming by @gravitygarden

Family Laundry (@familylaundry.sfbay) is the real deal! Since 2018 they’ve been swooping in to care for our community’s laundry—that means picking up your dirty laundry, then returning it to you perfectly washed and folded. Within a day. Like magic! Oh, and they use hypoallergenic, free and clear detergent, white vinegar, and state-of-the-art Ozone water-injection systems to deliver super clean laundry that’s super gentle on the environment.

We love that they’re taking laundry off people’s plates, freeing up our schedules to practice acts of Harvest Heroism 🦸
