Necromolds! First I want to give a big shoutout to @spookygemz for letting me borrow this game (and all current expansions) to try out, thanks so much! Alright, so Necromolds puts a really neat twist on your standard skirmish tabletop game. Like all skirmish games you and an opponent are battling with armies of various unit types that are the same ā€œsizeā€ in points. What Necromolds does differently is your army is made of play-doh and as you destroy each otherā€™s units you SMASH them with your summoner ring!!!! This is a blast to play, it has 3 modes of play for different ages so you can play with a toddler up to two grown adults and everything scales well. The molds you use to make your army are easy to use and fast as well as unique in there abilities so you really have to think about your army composition. The game also plays lightning fast for a skirmish game in 45-60 minutes. If you have young kids and like skirmish games this one is a no brainer. If you are like me though and have played a fair number of skirmish games itā€™s a tougher callā€¦ While the game simple and fast with pretty good depth there is an issue that I have with it which is no scenarios. Now I know what you are thinking, itā€™s a simple, fun, light skirmish game it doesnā€™t need those. But hear me out. They went to the trouble to make an advance mode, they should have made scenarios because making it just a battle royal with experience skirmish players leads to some less than ideal play patternsā€¦ Overall though this game far exceeded my expectations and if they DO add scenarios in the Kickstarter next month I will likely back it. Itā€™s no #godtear but imo itā€™s the next best thing (even better than #warhammer40k if you ask me since I donā€™t have to paint anything and it all fits it a standard board game box). Now or Never! The third and final game of Red Ravens trilogy featuring Above and Below and Near and Far. Now I have only played above and below so I canā€™t speak for near and far but this game feels waaaaay different than the first one. While it is clearly set in the same universe the mechanics and gameplay are totally different. There is a lot going on here but hereā€™s a high level overview. In Now or Never you and up to 3 other players are working to rebuild your ancestral home over 6 rounds or ā€œseasonsā€. Each season players will take turns back and forth until all players pass by running out of things to do, this means one player may take more turns in a given season than another player. The game has two main parts, the first is a world exploration aspect where players move their models around the board and explore locations or fight monsters. The second is rebuilding your city which uses a clever tableau/engine building system where you will start with very little income gain each round but by the end have an impressive engine going (which is good because final scoring is mostly based on your resource production from your city). For our first game @clarabradybaker and I played the standard mode which has no story and is just a Euro game. Overall we enjoyed it and found the mechanics interesting but Iā€™m not sure if it would stay in the collection if the story mode didnā€™t exist. The story has 6 chapters with a choose your own adventure feel as you explore the main board. This is what will really draw you in because as fun as the engine building is, the decisions you get to make with the story clips is a blast and really connects you to your character (this part of the game is very similar to Above and Belowā€™s). I am super excited to finish the 6 chapters with my character then see where we go from there. There are 4 characters and you only see a fraction of the storyline so replay ability is high. More Seasons! A friend brought a brand new copy to @gamersguildaz today for our board game brunch so I had another chance to play within the week! It was weird playing without the expansion cards but still a great game. This was a particularly hateful game with two arcano leeches out before turn 3 but even with that the game ended really close with only a 30 point spread between first and last. Rhino Hero! What a fun little game we played yesterday at the house! In Rhino Hero your goal is to get your hero to the highest floor of the tower by the end of the game which is either when the last floor tile is placed or it all crumbles to the ground. Each turn players will play 1 floor tile from their hand following whatever guidelines it has on it (number of walls to support it and their sizes) after that you roll a dice and move your hero up that many floors but watch out! If your hero is on the same level as another you battle it out and the loser drops one floor down. This game is super silly and fun and has amazing table presence as the tower can get super tall. We had almost completed the whole thing but on the last turn @clarabradybaker ā€œaccidentallyā€ knocked it down while placing her final floor XD Jenga will remain forever my favorite dexterity game but this one might just beat out #icecool for my 2nd place spot. The Godfatherā€¦. The towns to small for all the rival families and itā€™s up to you to stake your claim. The Godfather is a worker placement area control game with the goal of having most money in your suitcase at the end of 4 rounds. During each round players will take turns playing their thugs or family members on the board and gaining various resources or they can take a turn to complete a job which is the main way to make money in addition to the powerful effects the job gives once complete. A cool but difficult to manage mechanic of the game is the when a player gains money itā€™s in their hand but they need to put it in their suitcase for it to be worth anything which has to be done via worker actions. There is a strict and small hand limit at the end of each round so it can be tough to get your resources to then complete jobs to then get money to then bank money all while worrying about what the other players might do to mess you up. Also at the end of each round each territory of the board is looked at and if a player has majority there with their workers it is claimed by that family for the round. At the end of the game each region with the most claims by any given family earns additional points. When we first started playing there was a misunderstanding about some of the rules and limitations but after the 2nd round everyone was cruising. Overall I liked the game, it was simple but had a lot of interesting decisions to make on each turn. Sadly it is out of print now but if you get a chance to play it definitely take the opportunity. The King is Dead! I had heard a lot about this game over the last year or so but just had the chance to play it last week and Iā€™m so glad I did! This is a hard game to explain in depth without the components so Iā€™ll give a very basic overview. The king is dead is an area control game through and through but the twist is you as the player donā€™t control any of the factions on the board. Instead all players can influence the various factions through the extremely limited number of cards you can play in a game. By doing this players can alter which faction has more followers in a region as well as gain influence with any faction of their choice. The winner is who has the most influence with the faction that controls the most territory at the end. First off I love that this game plays in just 45 minutes but has the depth and feel of a longer area control game. Turns are fast but intense and the pacing is interesting since sometimes no one will alter the board for 3-4 turns then BAM a huge fight breaks out for 1 specific territory. I also like the overall simplicity of the game and how players donā€™t control any specific faction. The designer of this clearly put a lot of time in to make the gameplay exceptionally clean and for that I applaud them. Samurai Battles This is the first commands&colors game I have played and probably the last as well lol. For those who havenā€™t played a game like this, command and colors games are historical battle re-enactments where 2 players control forces from the time period and fight for various win conditions based on a real battle that occurred. You control your army through command cards that tell you which section of the battlefield you can maneuver on a given turn (left, center, right), some of the cards have other specifications like any group of touching units or 1 unit from 2 different sections of the board. In combat players roll dice for hits similar to most skirmish/war games but different units have different ranks (a samurai for instance is 2 ranks higher than a peasant) so they are more resilient against lower rank units and hit harder against them. While I find the rank system interesting I canā€™t stand the command cards. Sometimes you are being attacked in a specific region but canā€™t defend just because you donā€™t have a card for that flank. This led to a frustrating experience for me. Couple that with dice rolls hitting on only 1-2 sides compared to other skirmish games hitting on 2-4 sides which slows down the pacing and you have a game thats just not for me. It was disappointing not liking this game because I usually love skirmish games and know there are tons of these commands and colors games so I was hoping to find a new type of war game to play and collect. But Iā€™m the future Iā€™ll stick to games like #godtear and #killteams which have the same strategy but are more fast paced and interesting to me with less frustrating mechanics. Libertalia! What a cool game, definitely exceeded my expectations! In this game players are pirates trying to get the most gold over 3 campaigns. In each campaign all players will get a new crew they will use to try and get loot from the board as well as use the pirate crews special effects. The interesting this is that EVERY player has the exact same crew options throughout the game so there is a ton of mind games going on each round guessing what other people will prioritize. The game is super simple once the priority and round system is explained and plays really fast but with a good amount of depth. There is an amount of ā€œtake thatā€ mechanics in the game but itā€™s not overbearing and players can play around a lot if it if they make smart choices! Also it plays up to 6 players which is great for when you have a bigger game night but arenā€™t feeling a party game. Had a chance to play Abyss for the first time today. This is a game Iā€™ve been wanting to try for awhile so I was super excited. At its core Abyss is a resource management tableau building game (kindof like seasons!). Turns are very simple, you either flip cards from the top of a deck to get 1 as a resource, during this flipping players can ā€œstealā€ cards you have flipped by giving you the games currency which is pearls. The other action lets you take leftover cards from previous flips other players did. Or you can spend cards to take a lord and put it in your tableau. The lords give points with some of them having special abilities. Once one player has 7 all other players get 1 more turn then the game ends. Overall I liked the game, itā€™s super simple and fast. That being said I donā€™t plan on buying it, there just isnā€™t a lot of depth and the actions arenā€™t particularly exciting. Also the tableau is small and you will likely only have 1 or 2 lords with persistent abilities that are cool. If someone asks to play Iā€™m definitely down but if Iā€™m choosing a tableau builder Iā€™m going with seasons. Which do you prefer?
