🦅 Saturday was the last official walk of this year’s @greenerjc internship, in which high school students spend seven weeks learning about urban ecology and taking twice weekly walks in Caven Point and Lincoln Park West, culminating in a research project that they devise.

🐢 This was the fifth year that Jersey City Birds has partnered with Greener JC for this project - and as in past years it was wonderful to watch the students’ knowledge and enthusiasm grow over the weeks. By the end, most can identify at least a dozen birds by call and many more birds by sight. And not just birds - we explore native plants and trees and why they matter to wildlife, and why invasive plants are detrimental. Students encounter horseshoe crabs and turtles and all kinds of marine life (we even got to wrangle a beached eel during our last walk). And we enjoyed a special @hackensackriverkeeper eco-tour, and were joined by entomologist Dr. Kelly Zimmerman (@fillsyourniche) for a walk that delved into the fascinating world of insects.

🐞 Our thanks to @libertystatepark, Lincoln Park West, and everyone involved with this internship. It’s a privilege and a joy to help students see the world around them in new ways, and understand a little more about the connections between living things and the importance of protecting the incredible wildlife we have even in an urban setting like this.
