Supporting a more sustainable future in Jersey City 🍃🌻🏙

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

🦅 Saturday was the last official walk of this year’s @greenerjc internship, in which high school students spend seven weeks learning about urban ecology and taking twice weekly walks in Caven Point and Lincoln Park West, culminating in a research project that they devise.

🐢 This was the fifth year that Jersey City Birds has partnered with Greener JC for this project - and as in past years it was wonderful to watch the students’ knowledge and enthusiasm grow over the weeks. By the end, most can identify at least a dozen birds by call and many more birds by sight. And not just birds - we explore native plants and trees and why they matter to wildlife, and why invasive plants are detrimental. Students encounter horseshoe crabs and turtles and all kinds of marine life (we even got to wrangle a beached eel during our last walk). And we enjoyed a special @hackensackriverkeeper eco-tour, and were joined by entomologist Dr. Kelly Zimmerman (@fillsyourniche) for a walk that delved into the fascinating world of insects.

🐞 Our thanks to @libertystatepark, Lincoln Park West, and everyone involved with this internship. It’s a privilege and a joy to help students see the world around them in new ways, and understand a little more about the connections between living things and the importance of protecting the incredible wildlife we have even in an urban setting like this.

I’m deeply honored to receive the Sustainability & Parks Advocate of the Year award from the James Solomon Civic Association.

The names of awardees moved quickly, and I didn’t get the chance to share the words I’d prepared. So I’d like to share them here.

My favorite meetings don’t happen in conference rooms.

They happen when a kiddo stops to watch a monarch butterfly... when someone pauses to listen to birdsong... when neighbors become friends with their hands in the soil, caring for a place together.

This award isn’t mine alone.

It belongs to every volunteer who pulled invasive vines in the summer heat. Every student who asked “just one more question” about a bird or a flower. Every resident who planted something, picked up litter, or spoke up for one small patch of green space.

Because that’s how cities change.

I’ve learned that when we rewild spaces thoughtfully, we’re not just bringing back birds and butterflies… we’re restoring our connection to one another and to the place we call home.

Parks are more than green spaces.
They are classrooms without walls, green galleries, stages, places of healing, gathering, wonder, and belonging.

I’ll leave you with the thought I wish I’d had the chance to say:

Every seed we plant is an act of optimism and hope. Every tree is a promise. Every park we care for is a love letter to the generations who will be here after us.

For me, this work has never been about saving nature.

Nature has been saving US all along. Our job is simply to make space for it. 🌿

Thank you, Jersey City, for allowing me the privilege of serving our incredible community. I 💚 U

Join naturalist Kevin Avery and Environmental Commission Vice Chair Tammy Laverty for a guided walk through the Ridgefield Park Nature Preserve on Saturday, July 11 at 9:00AM. Come learn about the birds and native plants that call the Preserve home.

Meet at the East Grand Entrance. Open to all ages; children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Dress in layers, wear appropriate footwear, and bring water.

A porta-john is available at the East Grand entrance. The walk is relatively flat, but two areas are only accessible by stairs (about 6-8 stone stairs).

Dogs are not permitted at the Preserve to protect the habitat for wildlife.

RSVP: envcomm@ridgefieldpark.org

Tag @ridgefieldparknj and @ridgefieldparknature in your photos!

💚 The Environmental Commission works year-round on projects throughout the Village, from caring for the Nature Preserve to events like Earth Day and animal shows, all in the name of protecting our local environment. They're always looking for volunteers who care about protecting Ridgefield Park's environment. No experience needed, just a passion and commitment to the cause. Community groups and local institutions have come together to sign an open letter to the Jersey City Council in support of the bird-friendly buildings ordinance.

Jersey City is a birding hotspot; over 300 species have been documented here. And about 14 million birds migrated through Hudson County in fall 2025 alone! Unfortunately, Jersey City’s buildings are killing thousands of birds every year because of window collisions. It is a tragedy for each individual bird. Cumulatively, it is an environmental catastrophe.

Every new building that is constructed in Jersey City without bird-friendly design standards will kill birds for decades to come. Building collisions kill over one billion birds annually nationwide. Bird populations cannot sustain this level of loss year after year.

This ordinance is a simple, proven way to make new buildings safer for birds while maintaining flexibility for architects and developers.

Read the full letter and help show that our community supports bird-friendly buildings by contacting your council members today! More info via our bio.

Did you know that many residents in Jersey City, especially those in Public Housing areas like Berry Gardens (Greenville) and Marion Gardens, live in food deserts? This means they are over 1 mile from a supermarket or large grocery store, making healthy, affordable food hard to access. The impact is huge: families are at the highest risk for reduced food security when they rely solely on pantries and community gardens.

🌱 But there's hope! Organizations like the Rose Avenue Urban Farm (RAUF) in Greenville are stepping up, growing food seasonally and providing a vital alternative for healthy produce. Other key resources include St. Paul, The Apostolic Catholic Church, the Triangle Park Community Center Food Pantry, and Damascus Christian Church.

💡 Learn More & Help: Check out the map and resources! We all need to work together to ensure food security for every resident in Jersey City.
