I guess spooky season is here! 🕸️ The other orb-weaver spiders I’d seen on the trail have vanished… but I did spot this striking Silver Garden Orbweaver (Argiope argentata) and her web in the late season dark russet colored buckwheat.. by @greengossiper

Saw this lil jumping spider last night on a dried milkweed stalk! Johnson’s Jumping spider (Phidippus johnsoni), you can kind of see the bright teal colored chelicerae/mouthparts that both male and females have, plus the bright red abdomen (this one might be a female, with the black stripe??) It caught an aphid, and did a little dance! I don’t usually see/notice them on the trail, but occasionally see them around the yard.. by @greengossiper

What a stunning fly!! (Not something I often say 😅 Nothing against flies, but this one is just an extra glamorous bee mimic) I haven’t figured out an ID yet.. hoping for some help! iNaturalist suggests genus Villa, belonging to the bee-fly family (Bombyliidae) maybe tribe Villini? by @greengossiper

A female Silver Garden Orbweaver (Argiope argentata) with cool spines and patterns adorning her abdomen. She weaves a zigzagging “stabilimenta” design in web, and the silk reflects uv light to attract prey. by @greengossiper

Some cooler, cloudier days mean longer walks (finally!) to check out the area where the long-stemmed buckwheat (Eriogonum elongatum) grows alongside California aster (Corethrogyne filaginifolia). Saw one tiny native bee, but only got one photo before it took off. by @greengossiper

A lil crab spider with some kind of fly? On California aster. Late summer/early fall definitely feels like spider time… by @greengossiper

Vinegar weed (Trichostema lanceolatum) blooming! Saw a green lynx spider with a honey bee. I couldn’t get a good photo but was going to come by again after the walk…but when I did, the same spider in the same spot seemed to have a wasp this time??? Also saw a native bee (digger bee, genus Anthophora?) they are so fast! by @greengossiper

It was nice while it lasted 🥲 The last photos I have of the fascinated California aster (Corethrogyne filaginifolia). The hillside it was growing on has been mowed down for brush removal 😞 by @greengossiper

The continuing saga of the fascinated California aster (Corethrogyne filaginifolia)
It’s still hot, and walks are still later and shorter, but it’s nice to check in on this plant whenever I’m passing by! by @greengossiper

Almost full moon rising! Tomorrow is a lunar eclipse! The umbral eclipse should be visible as the moon is rising around 7:30, with the almost full (96%) eclipse a little after 9pm pacific time. Nice clouds tonight too, even though it was still in the 90’s at dusk 🥵 even the coyotes were laying low in the field. by @greengossiper
