Last night, the brightest star in my galaxy faded.

My mommy was the strongest person I know — she endured so much because she wanted the best for her family.

I prayed to God last year that He would keep her so she and my dad could see me graduate with my Master’s — she did. I prayed again that He would sustain her through her 70th birthday and to see her grandson graduate high school — she did both.

But this time, I prayed that God would have HIS way, whether that be to extend her life or to return to Him — she told me she was ready to go and so I had to release her.

I loved my mommy with every ounce of my being — I’d literally do ANYTHING for her. It’s so funny; she used to tell me that “I’m not one of your little friends or I’m not people - I’m your mom”… and yet, she became my best friend, my person, my everything.

I’m truly going to miss her “I don’t even remember what I called you for” calls, our weekly trips to Walmart, her being mad at me for putting up decorations wrong, her “where’s my kiss” before I left the house, her soft yet strong determination and will to have all her boys succeed in life, her house always smelling like her, her home-cooked meals, her.

I am truly saddened, but I am encouraged to know three things: she knew the Lord as her savior, she loved me, and she was proud of me. And for that, I’m grateful. The Bible says greater is the ending of a thing than the beginning — I’m not sad it’s over, I’m happy I got to experience Mary Ann Davis-Montgomery first-hand.

Thirty-FINE 🎂🎉

This last year really tried to take me out — dealing with aging parents, back and forth trips to the hospital, being a father-figure to an 18 year old, breaking my ankle and everything that comes with that, ending friendships and relationships, transistions in other areas, and just life lifing. But a wise woman told me to “smile anyway”, so I won’t let the cares of life take my smile. Come what may — I am convinced that NOTHING will knock me off my square.

It’s been three months since I fell and broke my ankle. And while the scars remain, the pain is gone and I’m slowly getting back to life as normal.

Learning to rewalk at 38 was not on my bingo card for my life, but putting my resiliency to work and finding out I’m stronger than what I thought - physically, mentally, and emotionally - has been the real outcome of this experience.
