At a recent event, Trump was given a gold replica of a deep sea nodule that American Ocean Minerals – a billion-dollar company – hopes to mine from the Pacific seabed
Just to be clear, the polymetallic nodules that reckless wannabe deep sea miners want aren’t actually made of gold. But a deep sea mining gold rush for minerals would cause untold damage to ecosystems that humans do not even fully understand.

Two more countries join the growing tide of nations courageously and responsibly saying we must not proceed with exploitation of the deep sea because we don’t know enough to prevent harm.

But we do have a long history of extraction being harmful for the environment and the people on the frontline, such as Indigenous Peoples and fenceline communities. We know enough to say, “no deep sea mining”. taken in International Seabed Authority by @greenpeace_oceans

The ISA must act in the best interests of all humankind, including those generations yet to come. The assembly must reject corporate capture by those who wish to exploit our ocean, privatise the profits and socialise the destruction.

Rights holders such as Indigenous Peoples, frontline communities, scientists and knowledge holders have observer status because there exists a wealth of expertise. Member States mustn’t let corporate interests undermine a well-informed decision. taken in International Seabed Authority by @greenpeace_oceans

Trump spent $14 million to repaint Washington DC’s Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool. Severe algae blooms appeared within days, and the paint started peeling off the bottom.

As a quick fix, his administration responded by pouring toxic hydrogen peroxide into the pool.

Now these fine folks want to breach international law to mine the bottom of the ocean.

What could possibly go wrong?

🥳 Today, we wish David Attenborough a very happy 100th birthday, marking a century of wonder, wisdom, and unwavering advocacy for our natural world 💙

For generations, this towering voice of the natural world has redefined how we see our blue planet, bringing the wonders of natural history into our homes while championing its protection. Through his work, we’ve come to appreciate not only the beauty and mystery of Earth, but also its fragility. He has reminded us that the ocean is not separate from us but our life support system, regulating our climate, and sustaining countless communities and species.

But admiration must become action. As we honour his legacy, governments have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to use the Global Ocean Treaty to create vast ocean sanctuaries 🌊
Safe spaces where marine life can recover and thrive.

The science is clear. The urgency is real. The tools are here.

Tell your government to create ocean sanctuaries. Sign the petition.

We paid a visit to TMC (The Metals Company), a Canada-based company trying to lead the way in deep sea mining. 🥰 With everything going on right now, truly the LAST thing we need is a huge push by wannabe-billionaire techbros to try and start a whole other new destructive extractive industry in one of the most remote parts of the planet. 💔

But we really do have the power to stop it before it starts! ⤵️

⏱️ High-stakes talks are happening in Kingston, Jamaica, hosted by the International Seabed Authority (ISA) to finalize rules for commercial seabed mining in international waters.

The first part of the talks last week basically re-affirmed that the world is NOWHERE NEAR READY to proceed with deep sea mining. 👏 Things are not looking good:

📃 A recent Greenpeace report shows Canada-based The Metals Company (TMC) is bypassing international law via US permitting processes.
📄 Another report finds TMC’s subsidiary companies pursuing deep sea mining may have breached their contracts with the ISA and ignored multilateral processes.
⚖️ A third study confirms current revenue-sharing proposals would return almost NOTHING to developing countries, making this yet another inequitable extractive industry.
🪨 A fourth report shows a clean, 1.5°C-aligned energy transition can be achieved WITHOUT deep sea mining—ocean exploitation isn’t needed for climate targets.

Basically….it’s not looking good for Canada-based TMC and these other deep sea mining companies💀 Environmentally, socially, & economically, this industry shouldn’t move forward.

➡️ The MAIN PRIORITY is for governments to commit to a global moratorium. Canada had supported it under Trudeau, but the current Carney government hasn’t yet reaffirmed it.

Can we PLEASE listen to scientists & experts instead of wannabe-billionaire techbros and money-hungry old men? 🤠

Urge the Canadian government to:
1️⃣ Re-affirm support for a moratorium on deep sea mining
2️⃣ Oppose a rushed Mining Code that legalizes seabed exploitation
3️⃣ Stand up to Trump, TMC, and others trying to bypass multilateral processes

✍️ LINK IN BIO, let's #StopDeepSeaMining before it starts 👏 🙂↕️

Last week on World Fisheries Day, we celebrated the small-scale fishers, coastal communities, and Indigenous Peoples who have long been at the heart of protecting marine biodiversity, sustaining livelihoods, and maintaining the balance that supports a healthy climate for everyone.

Yet the very communities sustaining the ocean are being pushed to the frontline of destruction by industrial ocean exploitation and climate change from Patagonia to Senegal, Thailand, and the Indian Ocean.

This harms both people and the planet, depleting fish populations, triggering food insecurity, and causing social and economic distress.

Yet coastal communities' leadership and knowledge keep shining through. Small-scale fishers and coastal movements are proving that they are the solution.

Show your support for a fair and thriving ocean. Stand with ocean guardians!

🌊 Do you know that the ocean is a natural healer?
Even when in crisis, the ocean has been known to bounce back when given the chance — coral reefs can regenerate, fish populations can recover, and ecosystems can thrive. But it’s up to us to give the ocean the space, time, and protection it needs to do this.

Two years ago, governments made history by agreeing on the historic Global Ocean Treaty. If they ratify the Treaty and use it to create ocean sanctuaries, they can do it again.

Tell your government to follow through on its promise to protect the ocean and give marine life a fighting chance to recover and thrive 💙
