This installation is dedicated to my brother David, who had a gift for sparking joy in everyone around him.

I began this work a year ago, spending that time running experiments on dinoflagellates — studying their bioluminescent responses, their sensitivity to disturbance, their behavior as living material. My son helped me work on the Roombas.

A fleet of 9 Roombas move autonomously through the space, each carrying a mycelium sculpture and living dinoflagellates (bioluminescence). When the Roombas collide, the mechanical force agitates the dinoflagellates — single-celled bioluminescent organisms that produce light through a chemical reaction between luciferin and luciferase, triggered by physical disturbance. The mycelium beneath them forms an invisible network, a reminder that connection and communication happen beneath the surface, in ways we can’t always see.

David was a lover of nature. He grew his own mushrooms — tending to mycelium long before it became part of this work. It felt right that it should be here.

Joy, like bioluminescence, is a biological response. It travels through networks and people. It lights up on contact. I hope this installation brings you a moment of joy 💫🌟

So many photos that I have taken over the last few years, whether hiking or capturing special moments with my kids contain a shadow of not only my silhouette, but my silhouette with an iPhone. This one was from a hike during the pandemic at Green Swamp Preserve in North Carolina, famous for its Venus flytraps.

Everyday I struggle between minimalism and maximalism. These collages are a combination of both.

The first layer is made from paper I found at Toji Market in Kyoto, back when I was an exchange student at Saga School of Art. The second layer is flat blocks of tonal color. The grid and rectangles echo the same structure that shows up in my installations — same visual language, different material.

My art tracks how new technology changes the human psyche and the landscapes around us. The drones are part of that. My son has always been obsessed with toy drones, and we started drawing them together back in 2020. The paintings themselves came later, starting in January 2023. The imagery means something different now, with drones so tied to war in the news. I started this before that.

My paintings are vibrant and celebratory, even though they address serious issues, which is why I often compare them to cheerful yet camouflaged protest songs.

There are about 25 of these in total — I’ll be sharing a few at a time.

I found this piece through Will Shott (@willshott), who runs a wonderful gallery in Chinatown and is also an amazing jeweler.
