VHS Panel Series: THE FIRST FIVE MINUTES OF HORROR ⏰

How does a great horror film earn an audience’s attention before the story has barely begun?

The First Five Minutes of Horror brings together writer-directors Zach Lipovsky (Final Destination Bloodlines, Freaks), Eli Craig (Clown in a Cornfield, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil) and Rachel Talalay (Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, Tank Girl and the upcoming YAGA) and editor Greg Ng (Backrooms, Longlegs).

Using opening sequences from specific films as a jumping-off point, the conversation will explore how filmmakers establish tone, character, stakes, visual language, pacing and genre promise — and how the choices made in a film’s opening moments can shape everything that follows.

Wild may be the only appropriate word for #Backrooms, #KaneParsons’ feature adaptation of the internet phenomenon that evolved from a series of unnerving found-footage shorts into one of the year’s most unlikely cultural sensations. But while audiences obsess over the movie’s endless hallways, impossible geometry, and existential dread, the artists behind the film were busy solving a different puzzle: How do you turn a creepypasta into a feature film without losing the uncanny magic that made millions of people fall down the rabbit hole in the first place?

The answer, it turns out, was to treat the impossible as practically as possible.

Backrooms has been a sensation since its release in late May, when it topped the box office and began its massive haul. The debut film by young director Kane Parsons, whose creation began as a popular YouTube series. It’s a psychological horror film that is a surreal, dreamlike creation, which signals something new in Hollywood - a film that has more of a lineage online than in traditional cinema. Working with A24 and some top-notch producers, Parsons leveled up with his first feature, utilizing the talents of VFX Supervisor Edward J. Douglas, Editor Greg Ng, and Production Sound Mixer Jan Hetmer. Douglas, Ng, and Hetmer recently spoke to Immersive about this new phase in feature filmmaking.
