VHS Panel Series: THE FIRST FIVE MINUTES OF HORROR ⏰

How does a great horror film earn an audience’s attention before the story has barely begun?

The First Five Minutes of Horror brings together writer-directors Zach Lipovsky (Final Destination Bloodlines, Freaks), Eli Craig (Clown in a Cornfield, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil) and Rachel Talalay (Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, Tank Girl and the upcoming YAGA) and editor Greg Ng (Backrooms, Longlegs).

Using opening sequences from specific films as a jumping-off point, the conversation will explore how filmmakers establish tone, character, stakes, visual language, pacing and genre promise — and how the choices made in a film’s opening moments can shape everything that follows.

Finally getting around to gathering the photos that the amazing @tiltphoto_pz took of this year’s @acefilmeditors EditFest.

It was such a joy to speak alongside the uber talented @greg_ng_editor (Backrooms, Longlegs), @iehagy (Widow’s Bay, Atlanta), and @terelgibson (Ready or Not, Cuckoo) on the nuances, challenges, and fun of cutting horror. There is so much artistry that goes into this genre, and it’s thrilling to see audiences resonating with it now more than ever.

Huge thank you to our incredible moderator @jexantus!! Loved the questions he brought. And jaw dropping amazement at the graphics @skwrlygurl designed. Thank you @jennimcx for inviting me, and giving me the excuse to fly home. 🤍

And of course, I live for any chance to share with a captive audience my philosophy around the balance of Horror, Humor, and Heart. Our job as editors is to build empathy, and in horror especially, you can’t have one without the others, they’re all just different ways of getting an audience to care.

This week on In Love with the Process, Mike Pecci dives back into the editing room with one of the most exciting editors working in horror today, Greg Ng, CCE, editor of Backrooms, Keeper, The Monkey, and Longlegs.

Mike is a huge fan of Backrooms, especially its voice, pacing, atmosphere, and willingness to be scary without constantly falling back on the same tricks we’ve seen in countless horror movies. A huge part of creating that feeling happened in the edit, so Mike wants to know: How the hell did they do it?

Greg takes us inside the process of cutting Backrooms, finding tension in patience, allowing strange moments to breathe, and helping create a cinematic language that feels fresh, unsettling, and unpredictable. The film presented unusual editorial challenges, including integrating its liminal spaces and slow burn tension into a feature length experience.

Mike and Greg also get nerdy about how learning to edit shaped both of them as filmmakers, how an editor develops taste, and why understanding the cutting room can completely change the way you approach production.

Mike connects all of it back to his current experience preparing They Like the Dark and the decisions he’s making before cameras ever roll.

This is a deep dive into horror, editing, creative instinct, and finding your own voice as a filmmaker.

The They Like the Dark journey continues as Mike Pecci brings you along while he prepares his first feature film and searches for the right creative collaborators to help bring it to life.

This week, Mike sits down with acclaimed film editor Josh Ethier, ACE, editor of Companion, Don’t Move, Orphan: First Kill, Gretel & Hansel, The Standoff at Sparrow Creek, VFW, Bliss, and Mayhem.

Mike and Josh go deep into what a feature film editor actually does, what Josh looks for before taking on a project, cutting horror, test screenings, and why getting past your first cut is when you can finally start discovering the movie. They also talk about what Mike is looking for in an editor as he builds the team for They Like the Dark.

A fun, insightful look inside the editing room, finding great collaborators, and how movies are actually put together. #filmmaking #podcast #editor

#Longlegs #backrooms #FilmEditor dropping gems!

Thank you @greg_ng_editor for sharing some editing wisdom 😍

You can write the perfect movie in your head.

Then production happens. Locations change. Performances surprise you. Shots don’t work the way you imagined. Production is controlled chaos.

Then you get to the edit.

That’s where you finally confront the movie you actually made — and begin the final rewrite.

@occupyeditors

#editing isn’t just assembling what was shot. It’s where you discover what the film wants to become.

I watched the film "Backrooms" this morning. I really enjoyed it! Backrooms is a incredibly bold, ominous, and unsettling horror with a compelling premise and a twisted imagination that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

The great script by Will Soodik and director Kane Parsons tells a thoughtful story with some wild thrills and non-stop tension and suspense. It's a story of mental health, the unknown, and survival unlike anything you have previously seen. I do think there is some inspiration from the found-footage genre, but it feels so fresh.

Chiwetel Eijofor & Renate Reinsve star in phenomenal nuanced performances. There are also some superb performances from Lukita Maxwell, Finn Bennett, Mark Duplass, Avan Jogia, Robert Bobroczkyi, and Krista Kosonen.

The cinematography is absolutely brilliant by Jeremy Cox, and it is accompanied by a cool creepy score by Edo Van Breeman & Parsons. It's masterfully edited by Greg Ng, and it has some excellent costume design(Mica Kayde), set decoration(Trevor Johnston), art direction(Alan Derksen), and production design(Danny Vermette). Kane Parsons did a phenomenal job directing this original, bleak, and riveting horror film that I would highly recommend.

Wild may be the only appropriate word for #Backrooms, #KaneParsons’ feature adaptation of the internet phenomenon that evolved from a series of unnerving found-footage shorts into one of the year’s most unlikely cultural sensations. But while audiences obsess over the movie’s endless hallways, impossible geometry, and existential dread, the artists behind the film were busy solving a different puzzle: How do you turn a creepypasta into a feature film without losing the uncanny magic that made millions of people fall down the rabbit hole in the first place?

The answer, it turns out, was to treat the impossible as practically as possible.
