I was far from perfect as a young man and even further from perfect as I navigate fatherhood. What’s clear is that silence is not an option even if it’s not fully baked.

This week, I found myself roaming a nostalgic place with my thoughts, making sense of the anger and responsibility I feel in the wake of the Cornell story.

A few thoughts:

1. Go ahead, kill the vibe.

Boys grow up daydreaming about superheroes for their timely intervention and courage in the face of injustice, yet we grow up to be spineless subjects to the loudest alpha. From the silent staff watching our president verbally abuse female reporters (or worse) to the our own friends “joking” about humiliating people. All straight men - me included - have been in rooms where they stood idle. I only became a man when I learned that it’s OK to “kill the vibe” by speaking up. You quickly learn where your friends stand.

2. Teach your son to fight… for something.

There’s combat (good physical skill) and then there’s knowing how to fight (good moral instinct). The important nuance is 1) fight for something or someone 2) use your words.

3. Protect Jane Doe like she was your mom.

Jane Doe is your mom, your wife, your sister, your daughter. Close your eyes and imagine her in that room. If the image is not enough for you to scream, get some help. In an alternate universe those men would protect her from harm when she had too much to drink.
