Outside of the Hudson or East Rivers, you can’t find a bigger body of water for swimming in NYC than Astoria Pool in Queens. In the summer of 1936, NYC opened 11 heroically scaled pools thanks to the WPA. Framed by the Triborough and Hell Gate bridges, Astoria was built for 6,200 swimmers, a massive melting pot and reflection of the world’s most diverse borough. America hasn’t made a serious investment in public pools since the Great Depression. Today, most cities can’t afford a plain old rectangle. #nyc #pools #wpa #public #swimmers by @greggsegal

Sunbathers on a steamy NYC summer day at Highbridge Pool way up on the west side.

Maybe you recognize those orange yellow bleachers from Manuel Miranda’s joyful musical, In The Heights, filmed here in 2021.

Highbridge Pool in the Washington Heights neighborhood of NYC, one of 11 gigantic public pools that opened in the city in 1936, all funded by the WPA. The New Deal pools - not just in NY but all across the country - helped Americans cope with the economic and social hardships of the depression. I’m glad these sanctuaries are still around. #publicpool #highbridge #nyc #community #summer by @greggsegal

Downtown Villisca, Iowa has dried up like much of small town America. Dunn’s 5 & 10, Stoner Drug, Moser Tire Shop, and even The Rialto Theater, all gone. The population has dropped to 1,094, but the community still has a pulse and it can be found at the public pool, cradled in a storybook cornfield. This summer sanctuary felt outside the reach of the world beyond, a distance not only of miles, but of time. #smalltown #iowa #publicpool #sanctuary #community by @greggsegal

Summer isn’t always a parade of amusements, but that’s ok. Fuller Park Pool, Chicago, 2017.

Diamond, a cosmetologist, photographed at Pulaski Park Pool, Chicago, 2017.

The pool was born in 1912 in what was then a predominately Polish immigrant working class neighborhood on Chicago’s West Side.

Like a lot of pools in the early 20th Century, Pulaski wasn’t built for recreation. It was designed as a bathing facility for families who lived in nearby tenements without indoor plumbing, a vital piece of public health infrastructure disguised as a neighborhood park. Named to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1981.

Banneker Pool, established for black Washingtonians in 1934, is in the heart of one of the fastest gentrifying neighborhoods in America. Gentrification doesn’t always equate to integration; most of the mingling I found at Banneker was in the line for the diving board. Nonetheless, Banneker is a beloved sanctuary. “Coming here kept me off the streets,” says Alex McCall, Banneker’s manager, who thinks of the pool as a second home. “I’m going to love this pool till the day I die.”

As summer winds down (at least according to the calendar) I’m sharing a few more images from Ode to the Public Pool, a project I started in 2016.

There aren’t many 100-year-old pools anymore. The Richmond Plunge across the bay from San Francisco is one of the few. It almost didn’t make it. Shuttered for years and slated for demolition, the Plunge was saved by a determined group of community volunteers.

I photographed the Plunge’s 100-year anniversary celebration and met people who used to swim here in the 70’s when they were kids. Or they learned to swim here and now their kids are. It’s always been a community hub. During WWII, diverse populations were drawn to Richmond for shipyard work and there were racial tensions. But they say here at the Plunge, those tensions vanished. Today, it’s still a cool, refreshing version of the melting pot, swimmers mingling in light that streams thru over 100 windows under the scenic mural by local artist John Wehrle.

Pringles break, Royse Memorial Pool, Oakdale, CA. Deborah Bollinger grew up swimming in this pool as did her 3 daughters and now she brings the grandkids. “They’re homeschooled; where else are they going to meet other kids?” Public pools, whether in small towns or cities help sustain community and keep the ties that bind from unraveling.
