What if we couldn't throw away our garbage?

In 2014, Photographer @greggsegal built an entire project trying to answer that question. He asked friends, neighbors, family, even total strangers, to save every piece of garbage and recycling they made over the course of a week, then lie down in it in his own backyard.

He built the sets himself, turning the space into a forest floor one time, a beach the next, sometimes water, and shot everyone from directly above so the trash surrounds them like a nest they'd built out of their own habits.
He didn't leave himself out of it either. Segal photographed his own family, including his eight year old son, before he ever asked a stranger to do the same. A lot of people admitted the process felt humiliating, laying next to a week's worth of your own food wrappers, leftovers, and packaging with a camera pointed straight down at you. Some tried to clean their trash up beforehand. One person even washed his garbage before bringing it. But that discomfort was kind of the whole point of the project.

You can throw something in the bin and forget it ever existed. It's a lot harder to do that once it's spread out beneath you, in focus, in a photograph someone else can see. Makes you think how much we’re carelessly throwing away and what we can reuse.
