Nothing is promised. I made this piece after one of my favorite uncles died from cancer less than a year after retiring. His name was Neal Amos, or Moose as most of us called him. Neal was my ride or die uncle from the beginning. Funny as hell, always up to dodge a shopping trip with the girls for a sushi lunch, and a fantastic role model for a youngster hoping that getting older could be a good time.

Neal had plans after he retired. A lot of plans. And we had plans with him. Trips, meals, laughs. Cancer wasn’t on the list. But Neal’s cancer diagnosis became his retirement. How screwed up is that? It’s not fair. It wasn’t supposed to happen that way. Neal earned his retirement, but he didn’t get it. Because nothing is promised.

When Neal died, that phrase hung in my mind for a long time. So I made this piece, and it’s seemed to strike people somewhere. I hope it does. I also swore to take stock of my life and my family, and set some things in order after too much procrastination.

First and foremost on my list was manifesting this photo in the French lavender fields with my mom. She’s been talking about seeing the lavender harvest since my childhood, but had never gone. I ran out of excuses to not get this done after what happened to Neal.

Happy to say: we did it 😊 Don’t make excuses to postpone chasing your dreams. If you look for a reason to not do something, you’ll always find one. Time is the most important resource we have. It’s also the one we can least predict. I’ll say it again: nothing is promised. by @gregorylastrapes
