Outdoor lighting should do more than help you find your way to the front door.

When thoughtfully layered, lighting can transform your outdoor spaces—adding warmth, depth, safety, and ambiance while highlighting the architectural details and landscaping that make your home unique.

As we recently shared in an article for @thespruceofficial (linked in bio), the most successful outdoor lighting plans go beyond a single porch light or garage fixture. By combining pathway lighting, architectural uplighting, landscape illumination, and decorative elements, you can create a welcoming environment that feels both sophisticated and functional.

Whether you're designing a custom home, planning a renovation, or updating your outdoor living spaces, lighting should be considered an essential part of the overall design strategy—not an afterthought.

The result? A home that feels just as beautiful and inviting at night as it does during the day.

The best kitchens are those designed to work for how families actually live.

This custom kitchen in McLean, VA blends timeless style with everyday functionality, proving that a bright, modern space can handle everything from busy school mornings to weekend baking projects. Featuring double kitchen islands for meal prep, homework, and casual dining, durable wipeable leather counter stools, abundant storage, and elegant glass-front cabinetry, every detail was thoughtfully designed to support real life.

Warm wood accents, layered lighting, marble countertops, and a striking range wall add depth and sophistication, while a classic runner softens the space and creates an inviting atmosphere. The result is a luxury kitchen design that feels polished, practical, and welcoming for the entire family.

At Tracy Morris Design, we believe great interior design should be as functional as it is beautiful—creating spaces that elevate daily living while standing the test of time.

Some of the most meaningful interiors begin with a piece of art. For this home in Alexandria, VA, a collection of Maine-inspired coastal artwork served as the foundation for the entire design, influencing the color palette, furnishings, and finishing touches.

Drawing from the artwork's soft blues, sandy beiges, and crisp whites, we created a cohesive interior that feels calm, welcoming, and connected to its surroundings. By using art as a starting point, each design decision feels intentional, creating a home that tells a story and reflects the owners' personality.

Family-friendly furnishings, layered textures, and thoughtfully selected accessories add warmth and comfort while keeping the artwork the focal point. The result is a timeless coastal-inspired home that feels both elevated and effortlessly livable.

At Tracy Morris Design, we believe great interior design is personal. Whether it's a cherished art collection, a favorite travel destination, or a meaningful family heirloom, incorporating these elements helps create a home that is uniquely yours.

When building a custom home, it’s natural to focus on floor plans, finishes, and the details you can already picture yourself living with. But some of the most important decisions are made much earlier—when the right team guides the vision from the very beginning.

The most successful custom homes are rarely the result of one person working in isolation. They come to life through collaboration between the architect, builder, interior designer, and landscape architect—each bringing a distinct perspective while working toward a shared goal.

When that collaboration begins early, the result is a home that feels cohesive, intentional, and deeply connected to the way you live. Swipe to see one of our projects and discover how thoughtful design can completely transform a space.

Save this post for inspiration and let us know which detail you’d love to bring into your own home.👇

When Tracy Morris Design joins a custom home project from day one, we help ensure every architectural detail, material selection, and finish works seamlessly for the client — not just aesthetically, but functionally for years to come.

This custom-built luxury home in McLean, VA, is a true reflection of thoughtful design and expert teamwork. From the gas lanterns that add timeless curb appeal to the hand-selected natural stone and rich dark wood accents, every element was curated with purpose. We carried the custom exterior wood stain indoors, matching it to the ceiling beams to create a cohesive architectural flow throughout the home.

One of the most exciting features? A fully integrated indoor pool designed for year-round wellness and exercise. French doors open to the outdoor living space in warmer months, blending indoor and outdoor living and maximizing versatility — a hallmark of modern luxury home design.

In the kitchen, a reflective copper backsplash tile installed vertically draws the eye upward to highlight the dramatic ceiling beams, while a custom copper hood accent adds warmth and depth. With two oversized islands, this chef’s kitchen was designed for entertaining at scale — combining high-end finishes with everyday functionality.

Luxury custom home design is about more than beautiful materials — it’s about collaboration, craftsmanship, and creating a home that lives as beautifully as it looks.

Whether you’re building a new home, downsizing, or relocating, moving can be stressful—but it’s also the perfect opportunity to create a home that feels truly yours. As designers, we have learned how to approach moving with a designer’s eye, focusing on lighting, room layout, and natural flow to make your new home both functional and beautiful.

Lighting is essential—maximize natural light with large windows, skylights, and mirrors, and layer ambient, task, and accent lighting to set the right mood. In the room layout, start by defining each space’s purpose, and use furniture, rugs, and scale to craft functional, inviting rooms. Finally, consider the natural flow and balance of your home, removing barriers and creating spaces that promote well-being, comfort, and a sense of calm.

By planning your move with these interior design principles, you can transform the stress of relocation into an opportunity to create a home that is stylish, harmonious, and perfectly tailored to your lifestyle.

We had the pleasure of transforming this stunning Georgetown rowhouse remodel for a busy family of four! 🏡✨ Working alongside custom home builders Cecchi Homes and Overmyer Architects, the TMD team designed family-friendly interiors that perfectly balance style, comfort, and functionality.

For the first-floor living areas, we embraced a neutral paint palette and introduced pops of color through area rugs, fabrics, and textiles inspired by the family’s art collection and heirlooms. With younger children in mind, we selected durable, family-friendly fabrics that could withstand daily wear while keeping the space elegant and inviting.

On the lower level, we created separate zones for play, relaxation, and rest, using bright patterns and soft textures to make the space welcoming and functional. Upstairs, the bedrooms and children’s rooms share the same neutral, layered color scheme, with textured wallpaper adding personality and cozy nooks for work, study, and downtime.

This Georgetown interior design project demonstrates how thoughtful interior design for families can blend modern style, practicality, and warmth, creating homes that are both beautiful and livable. From rowhouse remodels to custom family-friendly spaces, our approach ensures every corner reflects the family’s personality while supporting everyday life.
