A collection is unique. It has a point of view. It tells you where someone has been, what they love, and what they’ve chosen to keep.

When we first walk into a client’s home, we always ask about the pieces that mean something to them. The painting from a trip. A grandmother’s bowl. The books they keep coming back to. These aren’t the finishing touches of a design. They’re the beginning.

For this project, we drew inspiration from a collection of Maine-inspired coastal artwork. We drew on those pieces to develop a palette of light blues, warm beige, and white, then layered in casual, family-friendly furnishings and textured accessories to create a relaxed, personal space.

Before you add anything new, take a look at what you already love. The most beautiful rooms often start there.

The finished living room in this McLean family home balances traditional and modern elements: classic forms alongside cleaner lines, soft textures throughout, and performance fabrics chosen to make the room as welcoming on a busy weeknight as it is during a weekend gathering.

As we often say, “Thoughtful design isn’t measured by what fills a room, but by how a room makes people feel.”

Layering, done well, adds depth and character while making the overall design feel composed and effortless.

What layers have made the biggest difference in your home?

Open floor plans. Are we still loving them or ready to put some walls back up?

Turns out, designers have plenty to say on the subject! Designer @tracymorrisdesign weighs in for @southernlivingmag on the great open floor plan debate, making the case for keeping things open while finding clever ways to create a little separation. Think archways, partial walls, and thoughtful furniture placement. The best of both worlds? We think so!

Thanks to @southernlivingmag for including Tracy in the conversation! Read the full article at the link in bio. 🔗

As summer travel and long days outside give way to fall, there is a particular kind of comfort in coming back to a quiet evening at home. A lit fireplace, a warm kitchen, nowhere in particular to be.

There is real beauty in slowing down. Summer’s busyness has its own joy, but so does this: the pause that follows it, and a home that feels just as good to settle into as it did to entertain in all summer long.

What does slowing down at home look like for you this time of year?

Wallpaper is one of the most effective layers in a room, and one of the most often overlooked. In this Northwest DC home, a playful pattern sits beside antique wood furniture, set against a quiet backdrop of neutral walls and dark-stained floors.

Each layer gives the others something to play against. Neutral paint steadies the pattern, antique wood brings history, and deep floors ground everything above. The room feels personal without ever feeling crowded.

Swipe to see how the pattern, the wood, and the floor work together.

Where in your home would a pattern add warmth without overwhelming the room?

This month we are exploring The Art of Editing — the belief that thoughtful restraint creates clarity, and that a home built well is a home where every piece has a purpose. This week’s focus: Less but Better, choosing fewer details and choosing them exceptionally well.

In this McLean home, that showed up in the smallest places: one wood stain, one standout material in the kitchen, one lantern style. None of it needed company to make an impact.

What is one detail in your own home that works precisely because it was not crowded out by others?

In this kitchen, one material does most of the talking: reflective copper, used sparingly on a vertical-set backsplash and echoed in the range hood above. It is a single, well-chosen detail rather than several competing ones, drawing the eye upward toward the ceiling beams.

Those same beams carry the exact stain color used on the home’s exterior—a small but deliberate choice that ties each room back to the house as a whole.

Swipe to see more details of this kitchen.

If you could let just one material take center stage in your home, what would you choose?

Some of our favorite projects begin before a single wall goes up. On this McLean home, we worked alongside the architect and builder from day one, which meant every detail could be decided once, deliberately, rather than patched together later.

That early involvement is where editing really starts. A @bevolo gas lantern chosen for the façade. One stain color carried from the exterior straight through to the interior beams. Fewer decisions, made with more care, rather than dozens of unrelated ones layered on at the end.

Swipe to see the gas lanterns on the façade and the wood beams carrying that same stain color indoors.

Have you ever been part of a project where getting in early made all the difference?

Take a sneak peek behind our work ...

Behind every finished room is a space like this one — shelves of material samples, binders of sourcing notes, work tables built for spreading out a floor plan or laying out a fabric pairing side by side. It's not glamorous. It's organized, considered, and exactly what it needs to be.

We talk a lot about quiet confidence as a design principle — the idea that the best spaces don't need to announce themselves. The same is true of how we work. A well-run studio doesn't need to be flashy to function beautifully. It just needs a system that lets good ideas move from concept to reality without getting lost along the way.

Contact us to discuss your next project!

@bluepointhospitality in Easton, Maryland has had quite the run when it comes to expansion and revitalization — especially with its restaurant concepts in the area, including but certainly not limited to the @bas_rouge helmed by the James Beard Award-winning chef Harley Peet.

And the run is not over yet. The group has entered another period of rapid expansion, with some new hospitality and residential projects that proprietor Paul Prager says will be “beautiful, appropriate, and consistent with the remarkable culture and character of our town.”

For this story, I had the opportunity to speak to members of Bluepoint about their big-picture goals for the projects, as well as Easton locals and elected officials about their thoughts on the group’s expansion. Very grateful to everyone who shared their time and insights with me!

Live right now in @mddailyrecord - hope you’ll check it out!
