Work Forever: The Lie That's Breaking Men

A few days ago, I read a piece by Michael Clinton about how more people want to work longer—ditching retirement, staying professionally active into their 70s and beyond.

Now, I’ve got nothing but respect for Michael. Smart guy. Great book. I’ve featured him in Midlife Male. He’s featured me in ROAR. He’s living his philosophy—and that works for him (and well!).

But I see it differently.

Here’s my take:

We are over-indexing on work—and it’s killing us.

Most men don’t want to work longer. They don’t have to. They’ve just been conditioned to believe they do.

We’ve built a culture where a man’s worth is measured by his job title, income, LinkedIn profile, and output. And the minute that slips—when age creeps in, or the market shifts—you’re replaceable. Forgotten. Done.

And it’s not just business. It’s personal.

Let me show you:

Men aged 45–64 have the highest suicide rates in the U.S. (CDC)

69% of men say their identity is tied to their job (APA)

Over 50% of men in their 50s and 60s report high levels of work-related stress (NIOSH)

Nearly 80% of older workers experience age discrimination (AARP)

Depression and anxiety spike for men post-50, especially after job loss (Mayo Clinic)

But the message we keep getting?

Keep grinding. Stay relevant. Don’t stop. You’re only as good as your output.

That’s not empowerment. That’s fear-based marketing wrapped in a productivity bow.

And it’s breaking men.

Not because they’re weak, but because they’re tired.

Not because they’re failures, but because...

All I ever wanted to be was a dad. Not part-time. Not distracted. Full-time. ⁣
⁣
I’ve never been someone who lives to work. I work to live. The only work that’s ever truly worked for me has had purpose—and nothing has felt more purposeful than being a good father.⁣
⁣
Yes, I’ll always be their dad, but this season is different. Auden turned 22 last week. Harper will be 19 soon. They haven’t been little boys for a long time, yet in my heart, they always will be.⁣
⁣
I’m scared because life will keep changing, and I can’t control it. ⁣
⁣
I’m excited because I see the men they’re becoming.⁣
⁣
I’m filled with possibility because there’s room now to redefine our relationships as adults.⁣
⁣
And I’m sad because this one stings.⁣
⁣
Having one son in college and one son at home has been the best of both worlds. With Harper, I still had late-night burger runs, kitchen talks, basketball games, and quiet moments on the couch. ⁣
⁣
With Auden, I had Monday FaceTimes, CU football weekends, long hikes, river plunges, and 15-hour road trips where we found every dairy queen along the route and I got to introduce him to good music, while he got to introduce me to what he calls music (it’s not…) ⁣
⁣
Now, it feels like the end of a chapter I’m not quite ready to close.⁣
⁣
I’ve tried to raise my boys with integrity, resilience, curiosity, and kindness. To be unafraid of mistakes and eager for wins. I’ve told them:⁣
⁣
ā€œYou’ll always have a home here, but my job now is to let you go build your own. You’ll always have my support, but my role now is to watch, listen, and advise when you ask. You’ll always have my love, and that will never change. This chapter might be closing, but your story is just beginning. As much as I’ll miss the day-to-day, I’m excited to see the lives you create and the men you grow into. You’re moving farther away, yet we’re becoming closer.ā€ā£

The book that started it all.

I spent years watching men in their 40s and 50s quietly check out. Not failing. Not falling apart. Just settling. Going through the motions and calling it a life.

I wrote The Midlife Male because I refused to do that.

Inside is the framework I live by; the 6 F’s. Family. Fitness. Finance. Food. Fashion. Fun. Not as a checklist. As a system. A way of auditing your life, finding the gaps, and building a real plan to close them.

That plan is the MAP — the Midlife Action Plan. The business plan for your life that turns self-awareness into strategy.

I didn’t write this from theory. I wrote it from the life I’m living right now.

If you’re ready to stop coasting and start designing, this is where it begins.

I’m a husband, father, entrepreneur, athlete and coach who has learned that mediocrity happens by default. Maximization happens by design.

This book is the design.

From Selling Insurance to Selling Out Rooms

What if today was the day you turned everything around?

This weekend in Baltimore I spoke to a few hundred entrepreneurs at the Entrepreneurs’ Organization NERVE conference about what success looks like in midlife. On the flight home, I kept thinking about how I got there.

Six years ago, I was selling insurance and was miserable. I spent three years, three really long f*cking years, working on myself. *Note: I didn’t quit my job to do that. I couldn’t afford to. Instead, I stayed put at work and put in reps, reps and more reps outside of the office.

One day at a time. From age 47 to 50, I interviewed the highest-performing middle-aged men in the world and did what they told me.

And here’s what happened…

What if on MONDAY, instead of waking up feeling like you’re already behind the eight ball, and thinking about all the things you need to do, and have to do…you woke up and felt grateful for all the things you’ve done that got you to where you are? ⁣
⁣
My wife is happy and spending the next 10 days in Italy on a Pilates trip. The windshield cracked in the airplane’s cockpit forcing an emergency landing in Dublin, reminding me of how precious life truly is and how it could change in an instant.

She left me this note on my mirror in our bathroom that I found when I arrived home from a weekend in Baltimore, coming off the high of speaking to a few hundred entrepreneurs at Entrepreneurs’ Organization NERVE conference, which is the real definition of what success looks like. ⁣LOVE.
⁣
Our two sons are living and experiencing their lives in Los Angeles & Denver at 20 and 23. I spoke to both of them this morning before any ā€œbusinessā€ took over. ⁣
⁣
We get so caught up in what’s next...It’s so easy to complicate and add more to our lives. It’s really hard to keep it simple. ⁣

Six years ago I was selling insurance and miserable. I spent 3 years. 3 long f*cking years from 47-50 working on myself and to make changes. One day at a time. Reps, reps and more reps. Testing and retesting what works and what does not.
⁣
During those years I wrote a book; I interviewed the highest performing middle aged men in the world and did what they told me. That book led to speaking. The speaking led to guys asking if i’d work with them 1:1. Today I have clients across the country. I kept writing and now my newsletter reaches over 50k men each week. I started taking on adventures and challenges I never thought possible and now have an adventure club filled with men committed to living happier, healthier, wealthier, stronger and having more fun in business and in life. ⁣
⁣
So perhaps, a little more patience on Monday.

Show yourself a little more grace, gratitude and latitude.

Appreciate all that youve learned and continue to learn. And remember, that while the middle is messy...It’s also the sweet spot. by @gregscheinman

A buddy of mine saw a post about the Midlife Male Excellent Adventure Club and said, ā€œDude, this is great. Whenever we have vacations, I do everything. I schedule it, I plan it, I pay for it. It’d be awesome as a dad to just have a group of guys say, it’s all taken care of. Just get here.ā€ā£
⁣
That’s exactly what it is.⁣
⁣
It’s all taken care of. All you have to do is book a flight and a hotel. You don’t have to do all the stuff you normally do for vacations. You don’t even have to think about what your next adventure is, or who the guys are that are going to be there. Want to invite a friend? Bring them.⁣
⁣
We’re bringing happy, healthy and successful guys together for adventures and experiences that they look forward to on their calendars. Our members are Execs, founders, CEO’s, Professionals, writers, authors, speakers, retired athletes, doctors, attorneys, even a grammy nominated songwriter. ⁣
⁣
Guys who are relatable, credible and aspirational as husbands, fathers, providers and men and where the conversations about life, business, health, and family happen organically through amazing shared adventure experiences; combined with lux accomodations and great food.⁣
⁣
We don’t have to say what we’re not, but we know what we’re not. There’s no sitting in rooms for hours. There are no speeches or presentations, there’s no sitting in circles and there’s no white board. ⁣
⁣
We just do cool sh*t, with cool guys. ⁣
⁣
For years, I denied myself these types of experiences and opportunities while I built my companies. I’ve now realized that this is what makes life worth living. I’ve done things recently that I’ve never done before and didn’t think I was capable of, or had the time for, or that I was somehow not prioritizing the right things if I wasn’t staying put and grinding away.⁣
⁣
If you really are the sum of the five or 10 people you surround yourself with, imagine if you had a network of it 100 of those people. ⁣
⁣
That’s what the Midlife Male Adventure Club is. Men who really want to make a difference in their lives, and they actually do it. ⁣
⁣
Is this real? Yeah. It is.⁣

When I was 47, I rarely tried new things and I almost never did hard things. I was a middle-aged man who basically did what I was expected to do, or what I thought I was expected to do, the way I was supposed to do it, my entire life.⁣
⁣
I lived in a proverbial ā€œrise and grind and that’s itā€ bubble.⁣
⁣
You go to college. Then you’re supposed to get a job. Then you’re supposed to get married. Then you’re supposed to get promoted. You network through your business. Drinks, golf, couples dinners every weekend. You take a few vacations a year where you sit by the beach and overindulge. You come home and think, ā€œThat was nice,ā€ stress out on the flight about how much you spent and how tired you are, joke that you need a vacation from your vacation, and then jump right back into the conformity, complacency, redundancy routine.⁣
And you repeat this for the rest of your life.⁣
⁣
Six years ago, I decided not to accept that anymore.⁣
⁣
I knew I wanted to make changes, but I didn’t know how. I was willing to try, though. And I think that’s the thing. You have to be willing to try.⁣
⁣
So I started looking up different things. Google’s a wonderful thing. ChatGPT is a wonderful thing now. We didn’t have that when I was first getting started. Newsletters are an amazing thing. Finding people with credible recommendations and real experience. That’s all I started doing.⁣
⁣
And then I started trying stuff.⁣
⁣
That’s the whole method: trying.⁣
⁣
You never know if the thing you try becomes the thing you do for the next three, five or ten years.⁣

If you don’t try, how do you know what’s going to excite you from 55 to 75? I’ve tried a lot of stuff I didn’t like. That’s part of it. You whittle it down. You test and retest. New experiences. Embracing curiosity. New people.⁣
⁣
A willingness to try and put yourself out there is what it takes to grow and to not be satisfied with the status quo. Because what you want is out there. It exists. Other people are doing it. So why not you?⁣
⁣
This Sunday I’m sharing a short essay on why you should try new things in my newsletter. Over 50,000 men read it weekly. ⁣

ā€œThe joy of finishing is greater than the choice of quitting.ā€

Simple mantra.

The hard part…

Not quitting.

Not going to sleep when you get tired.

Not sitting down when your feet hurt.

Not heading for the showers when you get dirty.

Not getting on the buffet line when you get hungry.

Not returning to the recovery tent when your Lower back acts up.

Not getting off the Mountain when all you want to do is get off the damn mountain.

So how do you persevere?

By surrounding yourself with men of character, conviction, courage and a ā€˜lil bit of crazy built in.

I love all you guys.

Thank you for allowing me to be part of experiences like this with each of you. You inspire me more than you know.

G
