Back to my day job as an artist (the goose family are all fine right now!) I’m delighted to introduce you to Lorenzo, second cousin (once removed) of Lucien.

He’s been a super star to portray, sitting so still while I painted layer upon layer of tempera onto a piece of handmade paper to lend his likeness a plump, 3D quality.

We’re both quite delighted with how he’s turned out; we’re planning to celebrate with a measure of malt. But first we’re going to wash the brushes and put away the pigments.

Wishing you all a wonderful evening ahead,

Anna x

I was lucky enough to spy these two* dance and dip above the watery mirror of cloud and sky. Male holding tight to female, he’d guide her through this silent and looping sequence, occasionally pausing to hover low while the female dipped her tail beneath the water to release her eggs.

It was an act of hope. Also the end of a chapter.

These afternoons have felt warm when the sun emerges, but there’s no doubt that autumn is now in charge. It would be naive of me to think that all is well with our seasons; the summer we’ve just had put paid to that fanciful notion. But at least it now feels like that hot and inordinately dry season is over.

Here’s to autumn proper. May she be golden and restorative for all.

A day that began with a badger eating windfalls, that stretched out into blustery sunshine, that strobed through trees and rippled across the sea.

No doubt they’ll all be heading to their favourite nooks, crannies and flower pots as we slip into Autumn proper.

They’ve been completely charming to portray.
Painted in layers of egg tempera, each shell appears as if buffed and polished to a glow.

Time now to let them ‘set’.

And time for me to return to fish once more! by @gremkoska

Bits of early Autumn, as rich and fulsome as any I’ve ever known; she’s slowly beginning to weave her bundle of gilded threads among the slow decay of summer.

The pears are round bottomed and ripening.
A blackbird has been busy cracking and snacking at his preferred table of slate.
The field is ripened and loaded with seedheads, scabious reserving the last dance.
The to and fro of busyness as the bees top up their larders with ivy for winter’s dearth.
A fond farewell to the intoxicating perfume of magnolia; holding tight to the memory until next summer.
A road trip and a walk… one of many that began in a shroud of mist only to be shrugged off - along with sweaters - and finished with a swim; the sun illuminating brows and shoulders, the pebble palette resting deep below.

Happy Autumn Equinox to you all.

A x

And then there were eight…

Snails* are perhaps the most perfect representation of what I do. Painting in egg tempera takes time and a lot of patience.

But the end result is always a joy, with the deep tempera lustre lending each portrait a living quality once more.
