I'm one of 100+ artists donating work to Tiger Strikes Asteroid's first benefit exhibition. Purchasing this artwork will help fund TSA’s exhibitions across their 5 locations, keeping this vital alternative art ecosystem alive and thriving.

I've been a member of TSA since shortly after moving to Philly, and my love for this organization and what it stands for is deeply tied to my love for this city. Throughout my time here, I've been consistently astonished by what a collective is capable of doing, and how we all do it together. In short, TSA has continually renewed and reaffirmed my understanding of what art can actually do.

Why this matters: While the art world continues to consolidate resources and opportunities, TSA creates essential spaces for artists to connect, exhibit, and build community outside traditional gatekeepers. We act as a much-needed counterweight to the market-driven art world.

Tomorrow night, @sirenoftheschuylkill will conclude @greyory's Hive of Glass with a final performance that contemplates and expands the thematic elements present within the show. How can ego simultaneously evolve and dissolve beyond meaning, life, and loss?

From the artist:
In my exploration, the myth of Orpheus & Eurydice transcends its romantic tragedy to become a deeply personal narrative of growth. The loss depicted is not merely of a lover, but of a profound connection, akin to relinquishing a mirror—one that reflected not just physical form but also self-recognition and acceptance. This mirrors my own experience of letting go, symbolized by giving away a cherished mirror, a companion in my dance with self-discovery amidst social anxiety.

Reflecting on the passing of a friend who battled similar anxieties, I confront my own struggles with substance abuse as coping mechanisms. Society’s pressure to constantly engage, coupled with the allure of reclaiming personal space, underscores the need to redefine our relationship with expectations, particularly those we impose on ourselves. This journey, akin to Orpheus’s descent to retrieve Eurydice, necessitates confronting ego dissolution and emerging with a deeper understanding of self-love.

Navigating relationships becomes a metaphorical journey through multiple deaths, as we shed old selves to embrace new iterations of love and growth. Each loss, whether of identity or expectation, propels us towards profound transformation and renewal. Like Orpheus, we must traverse the depths of our psyche, facing countless deaths of ego, to truly grasp the essence of love and self. Through this performance lens I invite viewers to contemplate the intricate dance between loss, renewal, and the relentless pursuit of authentic connection with oneself and others. by @greyory

In just a few short hours (8 until 11pm), we are pleased to co-present "Spinoff" with @spindrift.phl as part of @greyory's Hive of Glass. @andrea_andrea808 and @calla_discs will be performing live, solo ambient/electronic sets and @deejay_furniture and @papaya.official will be back-to-back DJing an exploratory and experimental soundscape.

This also marks the beginning of Spindrift's 1-year anniversary weekend of events. by @greyory

Today @tsa_philly 12-6: Come visit Hive of Glass and spend time with the many lovely publications on display in the "Reading Room" (more to come).

Tomorrow 1-3: Join @rickyisnotavailable and me in the gallery to celebrate the workbook/catalog release of "An Exchange of Shifting Atmospheres." There will be food and refreshments (including coffee), and I think Ricky has some fun activities planned. by @greyory

Saturday, 12-6pm at @tsa_philly, I would like you to meet the Bargainer and hear his plea. Comprised of generative video and audio processes, "The Bargainer's Song" is a sardonic appeal to Hades' sense of balance and order. Viewed solely on handheld Casio Crystal Vision receivers via a local UHF broadcast, this video work (much like the entirety of "Hive of Glass") intentionally deceives what it may appear at first glance. "The Bargainer's Song" features a composition created in collaboration with @j.a.w_h along with original instrumentation, drones, motifs, stems, and loops graciously provided by @chinoamobi, @andrea_andrea808, #jonascambien, @calla_discs, and @ull___________________________.

How may you seek what's lost while still in the process of losing?

Dear Friends,

Please join me for the launch of “An Exchange of Shifting Atmospheres: A workbook for guided collaboration”, on Sunday, April 28 from 1PM until 3PM @tsa_philly . Organized and edited with @lesliemoodycastro , this limited edition bi-lingual publication not only represents the work exhibited in Tiger Strikes Asteroid Gallery (Philadelphia, 2022) and @lanao.galeria (Mexico City, 2023), but also operates as a workbook on how to collaborate across borders. Along with the typical catalog content, we included “in-process” images, excerpts of conversations, written bits of wisdom by all participants, and prompts generated for and by the artists. Featuring the work and words of @oliviacjia (PHL) & @fabiolamenchelli (CDMX), @tfredsa (PHL) & @plinioavila (CDMX), @megalicious77 (PHL) & @elisa (CDMX), @sdmitche (PHL) & @mariagarciaibanez (CDMX), @nicholakinch (PHL) & @virginiacolwell (CDMX), it is our hope that this catalog will help us share this important work of connectedness and shared creativity, beyond the time and space reach of the initial exhibition. 💡🛰️🛸

Snacks and sunny Sunday beverages provided. Informal curator & artist talk will begin at 1:30 PM.

This event is part of a wonderful series of programming organized by @greyory as part of their Hive of Glass exhibition, which runs through June 1. *Note: Grey is also the designer of this wonderful publication!
