Lucio Fontana was the first artist to deliberately damage the surface texture of the canvas in his works, thereby visualising not only their material character but also the creative process behind his paintings. Fontana created his first ‘Concetto spaziale’ in 1949, thereby opening a new and, until then, entirely unknown chapter in art history.

Grisebach is pleased to present this vibrant artwork as a highlight of the upcoming winter auctions! Discover more highlights at the link in bio.

Lucio Fontana ‘Concetto spaziale’ | 1966/67 | Estimate: EUR 300.000–400.000

From around 1907/08 onwards, woodcarving became central to Ernst Barlach’s sculptural oeuvre. Not only in his large-scale ‘Der Sänger’, but also in works such as this one, Barlach proved himself an outstanding wood sculptor of his time. He brought out the material’s unique qualities while evoking powerful emotions through an Expressionist renewal of sculpture.

Follow the upcoming highlights of our Winter Auctions on 26 and 27 November!

Grisebach is pleased to announce an amicable agreement concerning Siegfried Shalom Sebba’s self portrait!

According to a 1981 publication on the painter Siegfried Shalom Sebba by Karlheinz Gabler, co-authored with the artist’s widow Henriette Sebba, this self-portrait was once part of the Wisztyniecki collection in Königsberg. Its owner was Lea Helene Wisztyniecki (1888–1969), née Sebba, the artist’s sister.
In 1937, Lea Helene Wisztyniecki and her daughter Ruth Erika emigrated from Berlin to Geneva, Switzerland, where they attempted to sell parts of their possessions to finance their escape. In 1941, mother and daughter continued their emigration to the United States.
The circumstances under which the painting left the Wisztyniecki family remain unknown. Its reappearance after 1945 in a Swiss private collection, however, suggests that it remained in Switzerland and was sold as a result of persecution.
The work was offered free of restitution claims and with the explicit agreement of the heirs of Lea Helene Wisztyniecki and Ruth Erika Shepard (née Wisztyniecki) at our 2026 Summer Auctions and was sold for 103,200 EUR.

In a park south of Munich, Grisebach, in collaboration with the Foundation for Art and Culture in Bonn, is presenting eight sculptures by Anthony Cragg, Leiko Ikemura, Jaume Plensa, and Bernar Venet. The works, curated by Walter Smerling, impressively demonstrate how natural spaces can become a resonating body for art. Amid trees and meadows, they engage in a multifaceted dialogue about material, scale, and humanity.
