New Article Drop ❤️‍🔥

Our labor of love is finally published. It is ready to be read, cited, and circulated.

We both started our doctoral program at the same time during the COVID-19 pandemic and this paper reflects our experiences navigating our doctoral program.

We drew on oral histories from the Voces of the Pandemic project from the Voces Oral History Center at UT Austin.

An early version of the paper was selected as the 2023 Best Scholary Paper at the 2023 American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (@aahheorg) National Conference.

Thank you to the Voces Oral History Center (@vocescenter) at UT Austin, the leading national repository for Latino oral history, for providing the oral histories.

Vincent Anthony Siqueiros, 42 & Cameron Davis Capara, 33, Rest in Peace 🕊️🖤

An attack on one of us, is an attack on all of us.

[From @pinknews: Two people have been killed in a shooting outside an LGBTQ+-friendly bar in Tucson, Arizona, in an attack police are investigating as a hate crime.

Vincent Anthony Siqueiros, 42, and Cameron Davis Capara, 33, were fatally shot outside Venture-N, a small LGBTQ+ bar near the University of Arizona campus, at around 12:30 AM Monday (31 August).

The suspected shooter, 44-year-old Ousman Ceesay, also died on the way to the hospital after sustaining life-threatening injuries, per information released by the Tucson Police Department.

According to the Tucson Police Department, Ceesay had a note containing the names of several LGBTQ+-associated businesses when he approached the victims. Police are investigating the circumstances as a possible hate crime, although the investigation remains ongoing.] by @grodriguezlemus

Benjamin Alire Sáenz, 71 (1954-2026), Descansa en Paz 🕊️🖤

Thank you for sharing your stories and making me feel seen in ways that almost no one else could. Your stories gave me hope and reminded me to keep writing. You never made me forget why I fell in love with reading.

[@ElPasoMatters: Renowned El Paso author Benjamin Alire Sáenz – whose life’s chapters saw him as a farmboy, a priest, a teacher and a writer – died Tuesday night after a lengthy illness. He was 71.

Sáenz grew up on a farm in southern New Mexico, entered the priesthood and served in El Paso for three years, and later served as chairman of the Creative Writing Department at UTEP.

Over his writing career, he authored more than two dozen books, including short story and poetry collections, young adult novels and children’s books.

He was awarded the prestigious PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction for “Everything Begins and Ends at the Kentucky Club,” a collection of short stories set in El Paso, Ciudad Juárez and the bar at the foot of the international bridge that connects the two cities.

“Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe,” about two Mexican-American teenage boys in El Paso who become friends and fall in love, was adapted into a movie.

El Paso author Daniel Chacón, chairman of the Creative Writing Department at UTEP, said Sáenz was one of the Borderland’s most prolific and successful writers.

“What Ben did that nobody else could get away with,” Chacón said, “is be bold enough to be sentimental, to write heartbreaking things that some people might think are too emotional.”

Dr. Jason Arday, 41 (1985-2026), Rest in Peace 🕊️🖤

[@newscord_org: Dr Jason Arday has tragically been found dead in his home on 14th August. We have launched a new complaint campaign on our action hub, where you can file official complaints against the media that hounded him relentlessly.

Over 22 days, 249 articles were written about his plagiarism controversy.

He resigned on 5th August, and the media responded with a smear campaign consisting of 188 articles, eventually hounding him to death.

Make no mistake, the racial element is impossible to ignore. Others have had similar accusations, the news cycle eventually moves on. But when it concerns a Black man from a working class background, the cycle doesn’t move on until he is dead.

Our media is morally bankrupt. Our media is broken.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Corey Durell Ruiz, 38, Rest in Peace 🕊️🖤

[@theblkpwrcoalition: Another innocent Black life has been lost at the hands of a police officer.

We stand together for the death of Corey Durell Ruiz and demand answers, transparency, and accountability.

Our communities deserve safety, dignity, and justice. We refuse to look away when lives are taken unjustly.

Join us. Show up. Speak out. Stand in solidarity.

@fightoligarchywi: Kiel Baitinger-Peterson, a City of Madison police officer, shot him point blank three times in the head. He was 38 years old and leaves behind a daughter.

Madison has a history of police killing Black men. Tony Robinson, an unarmed Black man, was shot and killed by police a block and a half from where Corey was killed today.

Protesters took over and shut down Madison’s Concerts on the Square and got the name of the officer released publicly.] by @grodriguezlemus

Joan Sebastian Guerrero, 26, Descansa en Paz 🕊️🖤

[@chnge: Remember his name. Joan Sebastian Guerrero. May he rest in peace and power. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

This morning, ICE agents murdered Joan Sebastian Guerrero in Maine. He was a 26-year-old Colombian man who was here legally, was authorized to work here, and had a social security number. He was a father and husband.

This is the second murder by ICE in the last week.

It has been reported that, similar to Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, he was not the target of the investigation. Agents also conveniently did not have body cameras on during the incident.

Videos that have been released show agents pulling his lifeless body out of the vehicle, making his face hit the pavement while they handcuff him.

It is reported that his daughter and wife were present during the murder.

ICE cannot be reformed.
ICE must be abolished.] by @grodriguezlemus

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52 (1974-2026) Descansa en Paz 🕊️🖤

[@communalpress: On the morning of July 7, 2026, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was taken from the people who loved him most. He was 52 years old. He was a husband, a father of three sons, a small business owner, and the heart of his family. This fund exists to carry his family through the impossible days ahead, and to let them grieve without the added weight of how they will get by.

Lorenzo built his life the honest way: with early mornings, long hours, and his own two hands. He ran his own construction business, building, with real work and real skill, the kind of life he wanted for his family. He was known for his work ethic, his fairness, and his willingness to help anyone who needed it. When people describe him, the first words are always the same, hardworking, dependable, kind. He was the kind of man who showed up: for his family, for his friends, for his neighbors, and on every job he ever took.

At the center of his world was his wife. Lorenzo and wife met when they were just teenagers and had been together ever since, building a life, a home, and a family side by side over 35 years in the United States together. Theirs was the kind of partnership people hope for their whole lives. Now his wife faces a future she never imagined, without the person she has loved since she was young.

Cyrus Carmack-Belton, 14 (2009-2023), Rest in Peace 🕊️🖤

[From @blklivesmatter
SAY HIS NAME: Cyrus Carmack-Belton.

On May 28, 2023, 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton was chased from a convenience store in South Carolina, after being wrongfully accused of stealing bottled water. Store owner Rick Chow pursued Cyrus beyond the store’s property, shot him in the back, and killed him.

This week, Chow was found not guilty of murder, yet Cyrus’ blood remains on his hands.

Make it make sense.
