This week’s essay is by Paula Lezama, a decolonial researcher who reminds us of the true value of a liberal education and how UT Austin’s actions regarding curricular changes embody the worst of it. Check it out: higheredadvocate.substack.com.

In Solidarity with Lupe Gallegos-Diaz.

By now many have spoken about the legacy that Lupe has nurtured and tended to for over three decades. Her work is beyond exceptional, it is exemplary of a person that is committed to what Antonia Darder calls, “a critical praxis of reflection, dialogue, and action … [the] announcing [of] justice.” Within this quote is exactly why Lupe is being targeted, and – to be clear, has been consistently targeted by the university for many years now. Lupe is not a “yes person.” Unlike many people at UC Berkeley who have climbed the neo-liberal ladder of “success,” Lupe has stood her ground as the Director of the Chicanx Latinx Student Development Center (CLSD) – a radical, some might even say, historically revolutionary, space of liberation. As has been noted many times already, she does way more than “just” this, but I am going to focus on just this, because here is where the justice lies.

UC Berkeley has a long history of othering various groups of people, but historical records show a unique relationship of marginalization between the UC and Chican@/x communities. It is too, often the case, that the UC adopts and elevates specific Chican@/x individuals with the intent to wash its hands of a greater campaign of erasure. Brown faces in high places will not save us and, in fact, they often are willful pawns in these campaigns of erasure. Let me be clear and concise: getting rid of Lupe Gallegos-Diaz is an important, key, and strategic step in erasing the history of Chican@/x students and their movements at UC Berkeley.

Lupe Gallegos-Diaz is being attacked because she dares to do what all people that work within public education should do – she centers students, specifically students that dare to dream that a better, different, world is possible. She does this from the ground-up. She builds bridges alongside the people. She is unapologetically a Chicana, a Chingona, and she is a model of what a dignified human being looks like.

We must collectively stand our ground in defense of Lupe Gallegos-Diaz. Her story at UC Berkeley does not have the right to end like this. Call, write, post on social media, sign the student-led petition

Abolish ICE, Protect life!

From Delaney Hall to California, Texas, and across the country, folks are resisting state violence and detainment and mass incarceration of immigrant communities, via hunger and labor strikes, mutual aid networks, and mass protests.

HEAL Food Alliance came together to create the ICE OUT! Community Protection Toolkit, a resource to share mutual aid, tools and actions with workers, organizations and communities impacted by the ongoing ICE arrests and detainments.
