One Painting - No. 5

Joseph Lozano
“Winter (The Hermit)”, 2025
Oil on canvas
48 x 60 inches
$8,500

This painting draws on a little-known monastic sect led by Johannes Kelpius, settling in the Wissahickon Valley in the late seventeenth century, seeking solitude, ritual, and spiritual clarity at the edge of the known world.

Lozano uses that history to structure “Winter (The Hermit)”, organizing belief, doubt, and mysticism within a single, contemplative space.

Available through the gallery.

From Gouache to Oil: Celia Reisman’s Process

“I use the source as a starting point. Working from direct observation, I could construct a painting clearly from the beginning. But in the end, the challenge of inventing and creating my own pictorial world is more exciting.” — Celia Reisman, in conversation with Elizabeth Johnson for Art Sync

For Celia Reisman, painting often begins outdoors, with a gouache study made directly from observation. Back in the studio, these studies become the starting point for larger oil paintings, where she revisits the composition and reimagines the colors and spaces of the original scene.

Swipe through for a look inside Celia’s studio and to see how several of her gouache studies developed into finished paintings.

A selection of gouache studies by Celia Reisman are now available for purchase on our website. Explore the available works at grossmccleaf.com.

This Friday and Saturday are your final opportunities to visit Celia Reisman: Street Views and Common Ground, curated by Celia Reisman, before both exhibitions close on October 17.

Meet the Artist: Ted Walsh

“My work often begins with familiar things—buildings, figures, animals, objects, skies. I am interested in pictures that feel as though they are setting a scene, although what has happened, or what might happen, is often left unresolved.” - Ted Walsh

Based in southern New Jersey, Ted Walsh has exhibited throughout the United States for more than two decades. He earned his MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and has received numerous awards and artist residencies, including two Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grants.

Rooted in the American realist tradition, Walsh’s paintings and drawings draw on a lifelong fascination with buildings, landscapes, familiar objects, and the stories they might hold. From childhood, he has enjoyed imagining the spaces inside buildings, turning them around in his mind and considering what might exist beyond their visible exteriors. That curiosity extends throughout his work, where familiar subjects can take on an uneasy, sometimes humorous quality.

Walsh considers his subjects both as recognizable objects and as shapes within a painting, paying close attention to their scale, placement, and relationships to one another. As he explains, “The physical character of the work is equally important to me. I build, scrape, sand, draw into, and repaint surfaces until they have the quality I’m looking for.”

We’re excited to share a new collection of Ted’s paintings and drawings in ‘If Memory Serves’, opening October 23.

“When I paint en plein air, I look for order amid the visual overload of everyday life. Each scene becomes a puzzle: countless details collapse into simple, interlocking shapes on the canvas.

I distill every element through three core pillars—colour, composition, and feeling—and use them to create a calm, ordered space for the viewer.” - Laura Vahlberg

A closer look at Laura Vahlberg’s paintings in Common Ground, curated by Celia Reisman. Working from direct observation, Vahlberg transforms the visual complexity of everyday streets and landscapes into paintings defined by broad shapes, subtle color relationships, and richly textured surfaces.

Common Ground and Celia Reisman: Street Views are on view through October 17. Next weekend is the final weekend to visit both exhibitions!

Meet the Artist: Lisa S. Roberts

“Color has always been the engine of my work.”

Originally trained as an architect, Lisa S. Roberts spent more than three decades working in graphic and product design, creating designs for home furnishings, textiles, and everyday objects. Throughout her career, her fascination with color and architectural space led her to develop a distinctive practice in cut-paper collage.

Working with surgical scissors, an X-ACTO knife, and hundreds of sheets of colored paper, Lisa constructs intricate compositions one layer at a time. Her process combines the precision of architectural drawing with an intuitive approach to color, shape, and form.

In her upcoming solo exhibition, Quiet Home, Lisa turns her attention to domestic interiors and the objects that give them character. Books, furniture, artwork, flowers, and a familiar black cat become part of colorful, carefully constructed spaces that suggest the lives of the people who inhabit them.
