POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

How do you paint a self that is constantly changing?

In “Shifting”, Mickayel Thurin uses self-portraiture and mixed-media to explore identity as something layered and evolving. Handwritten reflections, and unexpected materials are brought into conversation with one another, composing the many versions of our selves that coexist, and what they might have to teach one another.

Take a closer look at the exhibition in our latest reel.

Get to know Peter Van Dyck

“There’s only ever one story that I’m trying to tell, and it is one that I have only seen told by paintings. I have to let the paintings tell that story.”

In his recent work, Peter Van Dyck begins by constructing an overarching spatial framework before turning his attention to the objects it contains. Interiors, still lifes, and thresholds unfold through measured shifts in perspective, resulting in the subtle curvature that defines his paintings.

Rather than working from photography or digital distortion, Van Dyck’s arced spaces grow out of sustained observation and the physical act of turning one’s head to take in a wide field of view. Each shift of attention produces a slightly altered picture plane. Translated onto a single surface, these vantage points accumulate into a unified spatial matrix.

Evidence of process often remains visible, not by design but as a byproduct of what Van Dyck describes as “honestly engaging the problem of making a painting.” Rather than resolving toward a predetermined end point, he allows each work to exist as it stands at a given moment in its development.

Get to Know Marilyn Holsing

“My earlier ‘Young Marie’ work directed the narrative, whereas with this work the narrative is open-ended and implied.”

In “On Longing”, Marilyn Holsing begins each painting with a colored ground of layered hues, building from that base until flora, tendrils, and shadowy environments take shape. Influenced by her work with dioramas and glass cloches, she studies how light reflects, distorts, and obscures, and how a surface can both reveal and conceal what lies within.

Rather than constructing a fixed storyline, Holsing allows the painting itself to guide her decisions. Forms press against their boundaries, reflections interrupt depth, and the space inside often feels denser than the room that surrounds it.

One Painting - No. 5

Joseph Lozano
“Winter (The Hermit)”, 2025
Oil on canvas
48 x 60 inches
$8,500

This painting draws on a little-known monastic sect led by Johannes Kelpius, settling in the Wissahickon Valley in the late seventeenth century, seeking solitude, ritual, and spiritual clarity at the edge of the known world.

Lozano uses that history to structure “Winter (The Hermit)”, organizing belief, doubt, and mysticism within a single, contemplative space.

Available through the gallery.
