POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We’ve wrapped up all our projects for clients and started a trailer build to help us get across the country. Most of the materials we will use are salvaged with the exception of this tube steel I’m framing the wall with. The storage camper will be bolted to the utility trailer so it can be removed if needed. The reason for the move is because Emily and I are buying and restoring an 1840 brick house that also has an 1804 log cabin on the property. We will be documenting the process @thecubahouse so follow along as we rummage through left belongings and antiques during the renovation. A huge thanks to @metalwoodpdx for letting me use the space during this transition time. taken in Portland, Oregon by @grounded.db

The new year is bringing some big changes! I’m beyond excited to see what @wildcathobbyclasses can create in our old space. Janette and I have worked together in the past and she’s the first person I’d want to hand the keys to since she’ll be reunited with the tools (and bring a ton of her own). Wildcat offers a wide variety of industrial arts classes and make it super easy to get your hands on some tools. Learn something new and support a local business all at the same time!

Two more table bases out the door and two more projects ahead of me before closing operations and moving to NY. The specs on these bases were inspired by the clients tops. Our client had some quartz countertops left over from a kitchen remodel and wanted to put them to use. We collaborated on designs and landed on these steel frames with reclaimed Fir flooring. I’ll try to take a few photos when they’re complete.

Y’all asked so we’re making it happen. Stop by this Saturday, 12/21, for the last goodbyes and final sale!! We still have a ton of stuff left to sell, trade, negotiate, maybe even charm us enough and walk away with some free stuff. You won’t know unless you show up.

Much love,
The Grounded crew ✌️

That’s a wrap on our Murphy bed install. A complex build but everything came together beautifully. All of the wood used for this project was salvaged material. We created the chevron pattern with these diagonal Spruce panels that were originally made to line the inside of pianos. The shelves, headboard, and trim is made from old growth Fir that came out of a building in Portland. We used spring loaded hinges from @wildingwallbeds but modified their design with a steel framework. The bed legs double as shelving when the bed is not in use. Scroll through the photos to see the bed folded down and up.

Process shots from a recent murphy bed build. Upcycled solid Spruce wood panels originally made for interiors of pianos that thankfully were salvaged and now create this chevron pattern throughout the steel framework. The panels were roughly a quarter inch thick so I laminated them together or to 1/2”+ plywood depending on the application.

We have some exciting yet bittersweet news but first I’d like to share my appreciation to the community and clients that have made Grounded a success. Life has called Emily I to her hometown in Western New York and we will be closing down shop at Grounded.

We couldn’t be more proud of what we have created in the last two years. As much as we would love to continue our work in Portland, we are equally excited by the opportunities in this move. Stay tuned for some big announcements on our next endeavors.

As we wind down our current projects and gear up for closing shop in December we’re planning to have a going away party on November 22nd at 6pm! We will also have a liquidation sale that weekend on the 23rd and 24th. DM us to get added to our email list for updates on these sales. We’ll have a wide variety of materials, equipment, furniture, and miscellaneous items available.

More details to come!

Thanks for the years of support,
Seamus by @grounded.db

With heavy hearts we said goodbye to our beloved shop hand, Douglas Fir. Hopefully he’s in a better place since the last few months have been a struggle with health issues. We are in incredibly saddened but hold memories and his spirit close. I couldn’t be more thankful to Doug for being my companion since he was a two month old puppy and sticking by my side for the last 12 years. We can smile knowing he was loved and is still wagging his tail in paradise. I’ve included some highlight of Doug living his shop life over the years.

Rest in peace Dougy Fresh 11/15/2012-10/31/2024

Polaris Hall’s basement bar is in full effect. This was a fun project piecing together the Walnut bar tops, cladding, and foot rail.

Piecing together a chevron pattern utilizing these Spruce panels. Pretty cool salvage story with this material. The panels were made as acoustic backing for the inside of a piano and are 50+ years old. In this process I’m cross laminating the grain on these 1/4” panels to give them stability and be able to see the grain from both sides. Thanks to @curve_cnc for letting me borrow the vacuum bag.

Some heavy lifting but such a pleasure working with these folks on this massive landscaping project.
