This is the final tier of our Coliseum Design install! The client wanted a custom mini golf putting green and enough space to play cornhole on either end of the lower level and we made it happen.

The second tier overlooks the gaming area, creating a natural coliseum feel (hence the name of this design😏) where guests can hang out, engage, and enjoy the fun from above. We added softly curved garden beds by utilizing material from the ripped out patio to make the border which anchored the corners of the landscape. These garden beds will fill in and be a drought tolerant landscape in a couple of years as the seed heads drop and spread. The raised metal beds are filled with black bamboo, which will eventually grow in to create a lush, green privacy screen.

The last 3 photos showcase the before of what used to be nothing but turf and a tripping hazard of concrete laying around.

We’re beyond thrilled with how this design came together and so proud to see this chapter wrap up. Now onto the next design!

This is the second half of the top tier for our Coliseum design! 🏛️

It features a custom wood bench inlaid into the middle of raised metal beds, creating the perfect eagle eye perch to overlook the bottom tier of the garden, where you can watch the games below while staying surrounded by greenery🌿

We replaced the old rotting wood raised beds with custom metal for longevity and a modern edge, and wrapped the existing concrete retaining walls with wood slats to give a clean, cohesive look that ties into the overall design.

We also demoed the original concrete steps and pathways, installed custom metal stairs, added a landing to level the grade, top coated the ground with DG and finished it all off with handrails to guide you safely through the tiers.

It’s been a long time coming but this week we’re finally revealing our Coliseum Design! This project demanded everything from us and we couldn’t be more proud of the outcome and our incredible team.

This first post features the top tier of the design:
➤ A leveled fire pit lounge
➤ Three sets of custom weathered steel stairs that will transform completely to a rusted color over time.
➤ A permeable DG top coat for easy walking and added warmth.
➤ A shade garden bed tucked along the rock retaining wall where we also repurposed material from the original patio to edge the new garden beds, an intentional way to carry some of the old into the new.
➤ A peaceful dry creek for nice drainage which is much needed in the PNW, plus a bench overlooking for quiet moments with calming views.

Swipe to see the transformation, the last 4 photos are before we started this project. This landscape was once covered in turf, rotting wood and a little bit of a concrete jungle. We are excited to see it gone while still repurposing a lot of the material along the way. There’s so much more to see. Stay tuned!

We’ve wrapped up all our projects for clients and started a trailer build to help us get across the country. Most of the materials we will use are salvaged with the exception of this tube steel I’m framing the wall with. The storage camper will be bolted to the utility trailer so it can be removed if needed. The reason for the move is because Emily and I are buying and restoring an 1840 brick house that also has an 1804 log cabin on the property. We will be documenting the process @thecubahouse so follow along as we rummage through left belongings and antiques during the renovation. A huge thanks to @metalwoodpdx for letting me use the space during this transition time.

Coliseum Update 1/2: Progress in motion! The base structure for the wood paneling is officially anchored, transforming those concrete walls into a canvas for something beautiful. Shoutout to the dream team @grounded.db and @loraxpdx for making it happen! 💪🌿 Plus, 15 yards of DG lives on all of the stairways + pathways and 10 yards of soil found its new home in the garden beds and raised beds, ready for planting magic. Stay tuned—we have more so much more to show! #LandscapeDesign #ColiseumProject #GardenGoals

✨Coliseum Phase 1 Complete✨

Our team has worked hard to bring this vision to life! We’ve finished grading and leveling the foundation, laying brick edging for the garden beds, hauling in decomposed granite for the lower level, leveling and cutting the turf for the putting green, setting 7 metal stairs, and installing raised beds. Proud of this incredible team and all we’ve accomplished so far. Can’t wait to continue this journey into Winter for the next phase of this stunning project. Stay tuned for more! 🌿 #ColiseumProject #LandscapeDesign #PhaseOneComplete #Hardscaping #GardenGoals
