POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
We had a blast at @groundgallery for GZF4 yesterday ‼️

We took a screen loaded with one of French educator Fernand Deligny’s ‘Wander Lines’, drawings which reveal patterns of non-logic communication, and attempted to use them as maps to connect ideas, sketches, notes, and findings.

Here are some nice pics from the day + scans of our un-finished wander maps!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to use the screen, dig into the zines we brought along, and sat down to impromptu study! 📚 An especially big thank you to @albert_longface for hosting and supporting us on the day! by @groundgallery

🌲 CATEGORY: Tree 💅

Over the weekend, Hull and East Riding Friends of the Earth were thrilled to welcome Eco-Drag artist @hannahwhitlow_ / @glamanitaaa to Hull for ‘Be More Tree’ - a #TreeStories workshop exploring how we might embody trees and share their messages and gifts through characterisation and drag.

After a morning of exploring existing stories about trees, navigating Tree Time, and collectively sharing more tree facts than you could shake a stick at… Hannah led us through a guided meditation where participants met the tree that had chosen them. Then through costume, wigs, make up and characterisation (everyone was so generous in bringing resources and helping each other develop!) we offered our tree spirits our human heartbeats, sharing our TreeSelves on the catwalk and in a Tree Council meeting.

You can see from these photos that everyone clearly had a great time - and we’re sure that it won’t be the last you’ll be seeing these characters out and about either! We might even introduce you to them later this week… 👀

Many thanks to @groundgallery for hosting, to our incredible, generous participants and of course… to Hannah for guiding us through such a tree-mendous workshop!

All our Tree Stories workshops, walks and activities are completely free - so be sure to check out our website to see what else is coming up and get yourself booked on! You can also learn more about how you can share your personal Tree Story in the Digital Forest, as well as discover a load of resources to help get our community connecting to trees.

What happens when you attempt to move through “tree time”?

Apart from looking slightly bonkers to anyone who weren’t there, you learn something about how trees might experience the world we share. Which, we think, can help us to understand them better.

Two weeks ago, our exhibition “Liminal Spaces: Home ~ Abroad” went live @groundgallery .
It’s an expression, through photography and poetry, of how we sometimes get lost or trapped in between versions of ourselves. In between our identities and experiences. And how immigration itself redefines our relationship to home, making it both a destination and an impossible pursuit. Something carried within while simultaneously withheld without.
When I think of this exhibition, I feel proud and immensely grateful for all the milestones I had to cross to breathe life into this. Like how I worried myself sick over who would attend if I told them until I simply decided to do the telling.
Or my terror at how raw my words felt once I had pulled them from my throat, until I eventually shrugged off the impossible task of worrying that anyone who honoured my invite would feel that this was all too honest.
Because is there even such a thing?
When I think of how well it all came together in the end, I pinch myself silently and think: I could have missed this. All this joy bursting from my chest at the light this exhibition has infused into the people who continue to visit.
Like how a friend pulled me aside and asked how it was possible for her—who does not share the same country with me—to feel in my words the strings of her own life story.
Or another who texted afterwards to say that my writing had left her so lovingly confused and unsure, but determined to rediscover where home is for her.
Friends and strangers alike who met us in the in-between, stepping into this unfurling of my mind and the audacity of the photos @iblaqprinz took with so much grace. Beautiful people who took such great care of our work that it has quite literally cracked my heart open and stitched it back up.
And I really, truly, could have missed it all because I worried that I wasn’t ready.
If you take nothing else away from this post, please know that sometimes, being ready has very little to do with being fully braced for something to happen or take shape.
Sometimes, being ready is about you deciding that you already are.
Especially when we feel stuck in liminal spaces. 🤎 by @groundgallery

Liminal Spaces: Home ~ Abroad — Opening Night
On Saturday 12th September, we opened Liminal Spaces: Home ~
Abroad at Ground Gallery.
Weeks of conversations, photographs, writing, experimentation and doubt have finally become a physical exhibition.
Watching people stop, engage with the work and share their own experiences was really really something.
Created alongside the incredible @iamd_ice , Liminal Spaces uses photography and poetry to explore migration, identity and the strange experience of existing between places.
The work began with a question that has increasingly shaped my photographic practice: What happens to our sense of self when we leave home but never quite arrive somewhere else?
At home, we are multidimensional: neighbour, friend, sibling, professional, customer, parent. Migration can flatten those identities into something more administrative-immigrant, visa holder, worker, applicant.
The exhibition explores that tension: between home and abroad, belonging and otherness, who we were and who we are becoming.
The response on opening night reminded me why I want to continue developing photography as a way of documenting culture, identity and contemporary experiences that are often difficult to articulate in words.
Thank you to everyone who came, contributed to the conversations and helped us bring the exhibition to life, and to Ground Gallery for giving the work a home. #photographer #photography #immigrant #africanart #nigeriandiaspora by @groundgallery

Announcing the next exhibition at Ground…
Liminal Spaces: Home & Abroad
Opening event - Saturday 12th September 2026 - 5-7pm. Further viewing dates and times below.
-
Liminal Spaces: Home & Abroad is a photography exhibition that invites audiences to pause, look closely and consider what “home” means when life takes you across borders. Featuring South‑East Nigerian artists Nnaemeka Ugochukwu and Linda Egbuna‑Ugochukwu, the exhibition offers a deeply personal exploration of identity, belonging and the quiet emotional spaces we inhabit when we move between worlds.
-
Creativity Rooted in Real Lives
-
At the heart of this exhibition is lived experience.
-
Nnaemeka, who works in Healthcare near Hull, brings a rare duality to his practice. His photography, designs and writing are shaped by the compassion and attentiveness of his day‑to‑day work yet driven by a creative instinct that has travelled with him from Nigeria to East Yorkshire. His images capture the moments that often go unseen, the gestures, textures and fragments of daily life that reveal how identity is carried, rebuilt and expressed.
-
Linda works in the Civil Service and her work sits alongside his with bold, intuitive storytelling. Her writing and photography draws from memory, heritage and the emotional resonance of home. Together, their pieces form a conversation: about culture, about movement, about the ways people hold onto themselves while adapting to new places.
-
Why Hull?
-
The decision to exhibit in Hull is intentional and intriguing.
-
Far from their home in South‑East Nigeria, Nnaemeka and Linda have chosen Hull as the place to share their work, inviting audiences to consider:
-
How does home evolve when you cross continents?

What do we carry with us, and what do we leave behind?

How does a city like Hull become part of someone’s creative story?
-
Come along to the exhibition to find out.
