Walking is the body doing what it was designed to do. It loads the hip extensors and the posterior chain, it activates the functional fascial lines that connect opposite arm and leg, it encourages natural spinal rotation and it keeps the lymphatic system moving in a way that seated life simply doesn’t.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What Pilates gives walking is better posture, more efficient gait, a stronger and more connected posterior chain and a body that actually feels what it’s doing rather than going through the motions.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What walking gives Pilates is integration. The patterns you build in the studio — breath, control, length, rotation — start to show up in how you move through the world.

If thoughts are of the mind, emotions are of the body.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The limbic system — our brain’s emotional processing centre — governs mood, memory, fear and pleasure. And through the autonomic nervous system, it is in constant conversation with our bodies. Tension, bracing, breath constriction, guarding — these are often emotional responses as much as physical ones.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Breath is the most direct portal in. It’s the only autonomic function we can consciously manipulate — making intentional breathwork a way of engaging directly with our nervous system, meaningfully. A slow, measured exhale activates the vagus nerve, shifts the body towards a parasympathetic mode and helps emotions be held and eventually pass through. Adding space between breath cycles can reduce our heart rate and blood pressure, switching us into a more rest, digest and repair state of being.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Rhythmic, intentional movement does something similar — helping to regulate the nervous system and gently release what the body has been quietly holding in a pace and manner that feels safe, supportive and natural.

In traditional pilates, order is integral. It gives us a framework within which to explore balance, both physically and energetically, while allowing movement to be manifest freely and powerfully in all planes of motion.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The perfect pairing of The Hundred and Swimming give us an eloquent example that speaks to this very intelligence and the intentionality of the work:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
♥️ The Hundred is supine, Swimming is prone. One works the anterior chain, the other the posterior.
♥️Both involve a vigorous, rhythmic alternating limb movement held against an isometrically sustained position of the spine.
♥️Both use the same percussive five count inhale, five count exhale rhythm — ten cycles, one hundred beats.
♥️The Hundred opens the practice by awakening the anterior chain and stimulating circulation. Swimming works the posterior chain with the same vigorous, endurance-building intention.
♥️The Hundred bookends the beginning of the mat sequence. Swimming arrives later as the body is warm and ready to work the back body fully and deeply.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These counterparts give us a really elegant example of Joe’s design philosophy — the body worked comprehensively and symmetrically, anterior and posterior, with the same breath rhythm binding the two exercises together across the sequence.

A brilliant system for autonomous bodywork – Joe had it right from the start! by @groundwork.pilates

Let’s talk about poop!

Gutsy Moves looks at the gut-core-breath relationship — the seemingly unglamorous, unconscious tension we hold in our midline, and what happens when it doesn’t get to move.

We’ll talk bloating, digestion, transit, and yes, the one topic rarely raised at dinner parties 💩

Movement-based, anatomically grounded, no kale required.

60 minutes — $65
10:00am — Sunday 19th July
Each Groundwork workshop is completed by a keepsake linen card — yours to keep, and to collect as our education series unfolds. by @groundwork.pilates

We’re rarely aware of how much we’re carrying until something asks us to put it down.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The weight of expectation. The tension we mistake for strength. The breath we forgot to finish.

What would it feel like to let it all go — even just for 45 minutes?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Meet and experience yourself, just as you are. No pressure. No performance. Just you.

Action is the catalyst for motivation, not the result of it.

If you’re having trouble getting yourself to finally do the thing — just start!
