A beautiful triangle sound is only the beginning.

Antonín Dvořák - Symphony No. 9, “From the New World”
III. Scherzo: Molto vivace | Triangle
Performed by Lise Duarte Nuñez.

The triangle's brightness can draw the ear immediately. But Dvořák's Scherzo asks for more than isolated flashes of sound: the written part includes sustained tremolos, separate attacks and rests. They do not all have the same musical job.

THREE THINGS TO LISTEN FOR

Placement: can you hear where the attack belongs within the pulse, rather than hearing only an isolated metallic sound?

Clarity: does a change in volume also change the character of the attack? A more forceful stroke is not automatically a more useful sound.

Resonance: listen past the initial contact. Where your passage includes a roll followed by a separate stroke, can you hear both the continuity and the new attack?

A PRACTICE IDEA

Choose a short passage and count through it before playing. Record one take, then listen twice: first for rhythmic placement, then for the sound after each attack. Write down one difference you want to explore and change one variable at a time.

This is a listening exercise, not a fixed rule about where to strike or when to dampen. Those choices depend on the written part, the instrument and the musical context.

Save this for your next triangle practice. What do you find hardest to judge: the entrance, the sound colour or the resonance?

You know the passage. Then someone listens, and it feels different.

What are you practising: the passage, or performing the passage?

For this series, I'm using a teaching analogy: hardware and software.

HARDWARE is your musical technique: sound, rhythm and control.

SOFTWARE is how you respond under pressure: where your attention goes, how you work with nerves, and how you continue after a mistake.

Your technique hasn't become useless. But worry can draw attention away from the music you prepared.

“Don't miss” names what you fear. A musical cue points towards what you want to do.

Here are possible examples, not universal formulas:

“Keep the phrase moving” might remind you of the direction between notes.

“Warm sound” might recall a tone you have already explored.

“Steady pulse” might reconnect you with an established rhythmic feeling.

The words need meaning in YOUR passage. Choose one cue, try it while playing, and notice whether it supports your intention. A reassuring phrase alone is not the goal.

TRY THIS:

1. Choose a passage you have already prepared.
2. Recall your cue before one recorded take. Continue after a mistake.
3. Listen back. What did you hear in the sound or phrasing? Did the cue help you return to the music?
4. Write one observation and one next step.

Recording can add pressure for some musicians, not everyone. Mental preparation supports musical work; it doesn't replace it or guarantee an audition result.

Save this for your next practice. In the comments, tell me your passage and the cue you would try.

This is what audition panels listen for.

Sebastian Schmid - Tambur-ille (2022). Etüde für Tamburin.

Published in 2022 as part of "The 4 Etudes for Audition Presentation," Tambur-ille has quickly become a standard in orchestral percussion auditions worldwide. The title itself is a wordplay: "Tamburin" meets "Batterie" — a study that tests the full spectrum of tambourine technique.

What makes this étude so demanding:
- Precise articulation at various tempi
- Dynamic control from pianissimo to fortissimo
- Multiple shake techniques and strike patterns
- Rhythmic complexity with mixed meters
- Musical phrasing on an instrument often reduced to "effect"

Schmid wrote this specifically "zur Vorlage beim Probespiel" — for presentation at auditions. Every note is designed to reveal whether the percussionist has mastered not just the instrument, but the musical intelligence required to play it.

This is not a showpiece. It is a test.

Gear for this excerpt:
- Tambourine: @groverpro Protégé P-T2/GS – 10″ double-row
 Silver jingles, Natural head

The silver jingles provide the clarity and articulation this étude demands, while the natural head delivers warmth and control across the full dynamic range.

The hardest part is not playing it.

It's carrying the joyous vortex of life.

Antonín Dvořák - Carnival Overture, Op. 92 (1891).

In 1891, Dvořák composed three concert overtures as a philosophical triptych: Nature – Life – Love. The second movement, originally titled "Life," became known as the Carnival Overture.

Dvořák himself considered these three works "my best orchestral works" — a statement he made to his publisher Fritz Simrock in 1893, after completing his "New World" Symphony.

The program he imagined: a solitary traveler arrives at the edge of a town where a carnival is in full swing. The noise of instruments, cries of joy, songs and dances. The traveler is gradually "seized into the joyous vortex of life."

The tambourine does not simply add rhythm. It represents the collective energy that pulls the individual into the celebration. It is the sound of life itself.

Composed in just six weeks (July 28 – September 12, 1891), this overture premiered in Prague on April 28, 1892, as part of Dvořák's farewell concert before departing for America. Six months later, he conducted it at Carnegie Hall in New York.
