I can’t be the only one… #garden #dahlia #flower #flowerfarmerwannabe #utah by @growingwithnikole

Part 3 of digging, dividing, and storing dahlia tubers!

Here’s how I’m labeling and storing my dahlia tubers for winter!

After dividing, I label each tuber with its variety name and place it in a bag with vermiculite to help retain moisture. I lightly mist the vermiculite before placing the bags into storage bins in my unheated garage.

I’ll be monitoring the temperature and checking on my tubers throughout the winter to make sure they don’t dry out, rot, or freeze.

There are several ways to store dahlia tubers, but this is the method I’m trying this year! I’ll share updates on how they do.

How do you store your dahlia tubers? I’d love to hear what works for you!

Save this for when you’re ready to store yours!

Dahlia dividing season is in full swing!

Dividing tubers takes time, patience, and a lot of attention to detail. Each tuber needs three important parts to grow into a new plant next season:

Body: The main part of the tuber that stores energy and nutrients.

Neck: The narrow section connecting the body to the crown. It needs to remain intact for the tuber to be viable.

Crown: The area where new growth develops. Each division needs a piece of crown tissue with at least one viable eye (growth point).

Sanitizing tools is another important part of the process. I disinfect my cutting tools between clumps to help prevent the spread of disease and keep my tubers as healthy as possible.

It’s a time-consuming process, but I enjoy taking the time to carefully inspect each tuber. My goal is to make sure every tuber I save or sell has the best possible chance of growing into a healthy dahlia plant next season!

And just like that, another dahlia season has come to an end. 🥹🌸

This season was full of learning, experimenting, successes, and plenty of mistakes along the way. It’s crazy to think how much beauty can come from a few little tubers planted in the ground.

As much as I’m sad to see the flowers go, I’m excited to see what next year brings. For now, it’s time to dig, divide, store, and start dreaming about next season!

Until next year, dahlias. 🤍🌱

Blizzard 🤍❄️

Such a beautiful, classic white dahlia! I love how its crisp white petals brighten up any bouquet and pair so well with just about every color. Definitely one of those varieties that makes you appreciate the simple beauty of flowers!

Peaches n Cream is one of those dahlias that lives up to the hype! 🍑🌸 The soft peachy pink petals, creamy center, and gorgeous blooms make it one of my absolute favorites. It was such a great producer in my garden this year, and I already know I’ll be growing more next season! by @growingwithnikole

Yeah he totally willingly does this…. 😂😂 by @growingwithnikole

Did you know dahlias were once grown for food, not just flowers? 🌸

Long before dahlias became popular garden flowers, Indigenous people in Mexico cultivated them for their edible tubers! When dahlias were introduced to Europe, people even experimented with growing them as a food crop.

Today, we grow them for their gorgeous blooms, but it’s pretty fascinating to think about their history!

Would you ever try eating a dahlia tuber? 👀🌱 #garden #dahlia #flower #flowerfarmerwannabe #utah by @growingwithnikole

One of my greatest joys is growing cut flowers! #dahliasfordays #dahlia #dahlialove by @growingwithnikole
