December 4th, 2016. Ice season was struggling to get going, but we were chomping at the bit to get out there. Nothing was really in down low, but Phil had heard about this zone up on the side of Mt. Madison that we decided to check out. We knew the approach would be at least 4 miles with over 3600’ of elevation gain, what we didn’t know was if we were going to find anything worth climbing.
.

Our first crux of the day was finding the trail descending into Madison Gulf. We scouted along the ridge and started descending, but I was convinced that we were just following a stream bed, so we hiked back out. After a bit more scouting, we realized we were on the right path the first time around and that the rest of this approach wasn’t going to be as easy as the hike up to the ridge. We postholed downhill, slogging through deep snow, trying not to find the holes between the boulders that were just covered enough. We kept hoping for a clearing that would lead us straight to the climbs, but it became apparent that we were going to have to bushwhack our way over there. Between the dense forest and deep snow, it was a miserable slog that seemed like it would never end. We eventually escaped the grasp of the pine trees and saw what we had come for. Ice! We were amazed by how much there already was this early in the season.
.

It was after 2pm when we finally started climbing. Phil led both pitches and we topped out into our second crux of the day. The sun was going down and we knew that getting to the ridge before nightfall was critical. The uphill travel was exhausting, some of the most unpleasant bushwhacking I’ve ever had to experience mixed in with chest deep snow, it was like trying to swim straight uphill. Having been on the move for most of the day, our energy levels were low, but the sun had set and we couldn’t afford to stop moving. As luck would have it, we made it to tree line just as the last bit of light was fading. We could finally relax. We donned our headlamps, took in some much needed food and water, and stumbled our way down the trail back to the car. by @grubberz
