Some mornings are worth getting up early for. Broadstairs, Kent coast, this morning

Beautiful golden light. A sky full of colour. And the sea rolling in beneath it all.

No dramatic wildlife today. Just a few quiet minutes watching the coast come alive.

Sometimes nature doesn’t need anything more than this. Would you have stopped to watch this sunrise?

Probably the cutest thing you are going to see today. It certainly made my day when I was rolling around on the cold sand. A baby grey seal playing around in the sand just in front of its sleeping mother. Worth every second of the 9 hour round trip. These baby seals grow up fast (literally) gaining 4 times its body weight in as many weeks. Then they are on their own as their mother’s mate and go back to sea again. Those 👀

Taken with a very long zoom, cropped heavily and taken behind the fenced off area on a stunning, wild Norfolk beach. Please don’t think you can get this close to a baby seal in reality. Baby seal’s are extremely vulnerable for the first few weeks of their lives so please give them space.

On our way back from South West France, we stopped off in a small village called Auvers-sur-Oise on the recommendation of a good friend @chandelierstobones . I normally drive back to Calais as quickly as possible, stopping only for comfort breaks, but so glad I made the stop this time.

This village is where Vincent Van Gogh spent the last days of his troubled life. It is a beautiful village in its own right but made more special by the fact many excellent artists stayed and painted there.

Van Gogh moved here after spending some time in the South of France where he famously chopped off part of his ear after an argument with Paul Gauguin. In and out of institutions, he decided to move north to be close to his brother Theo.

Unlike the painting of his room in Arles, his final room in Auvers-sur-Oise was modest with little light. A small attic room of just 7 sq. meters, lit only by a small roof light (room number 5). Not enough light to paint but you can still see the holes in the bare plaster walls where he hung his canvases to dry. This small attic room where “there is nothing to see… but everything to feel” has remained untouched since 1890. Out of superstition the landlords never again rented out the room so it remains untouched.

He originally loved it in Auvers-sur-Oise and produced 70 paintings in the two short months he lived there. Things changed though after his visit to see his brother Theo and his new baby, also called Vincent.

On 27th July 1890 it seems he decided to take his own life but died 2 agonising days later with his brother Theo by his side. Theo himself died 6 months later and they are now buried side by side in a modest grave close to the wheat fields Vincent had painted.

A prolific and dedicated painter who was starting to become recognised died not knowing how much he would be loved. As with many artists his work was largely unappreciated until after his death.

A fascinating and tragic story of huge talent and mental illness. Take the time to stop and visit. You won’t regret it.

A Cormorant fishing in Ramsgate Harbour on Sunday evening. Sun out and water clear. I love the close-ups but let me know what think. Those eyes.

Cormorants can often be spotted perched on a rock or bank with their wings held out. In this stance, they are able to dry their feathers off which are not waterproof. The UK holds internationally important wintering numbers of cormorant.

Lunch time for this Little Grebe at Sandwich Bird Observatory, almost bit of more than he could chew. The little grebe is a fantastic diver, but to help it swim underwater, its feet are placed towards the back of its body, making it rather clumsy on land. It only really comes ashore to breed.
