For the second year in a row, a Georgetown nursing faculty member has received the Inspiration in Women's Health: Education Award.

Associate professor Katie Atkin, DNP, WHNP-BC, ANP-BC, received the 2026 award from the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH) on Sept. 23 at its Annual Women's Healthcare Conference in Richmond, Va. NPWH selected her for her contributions to the profession and her "inspirational presence as an educator." She follows Ella Heitzler, PhD, WHNP-BC, FNP-BC, RNC-OB, FNPWH, who received the honor in 2025.

Atkin teaches in our Nurse-Midwifery/Women's Health Nurse Practitioner and Women's Health Nurse Practitioner programs. Drawing on more than two decades of clinical practice and education, she prepares students to provide evidence-based, equitable and patient-centered perinatal, sexual and reproductive health care.

"Mentoring future midwives and WHNPs remains the highlight of my career," Atkin said.

Her students feel that commitment. "She has a remarkable ability to make students feel seen, supported, and inspired while challenging them to reach for excellence," said Roberta Waite, EdD, RN, PMHCNS, ANEF, FADLN, FAAN, dean of the Berkley School of Nursing.

Georgetown's Women's Health Nurse Practitioner graduates passed the National Certification Corporation (NCC) certification exam on the first try at a rate of 95% in 2025; the national average was 80%. Our midwifery students passed the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) certification exam on the first try at a rate of 84% in 2025; the national average was 74%. These above-average pass rates reflect the expertise of Georgetown’s faculty and their commitment to preparing students for clinical practice.

Faculty at the Berkley School of Nursing put that experience into a test preparation book so students anywhere can benefit from their knowledge.

Georgetown Midwifery & WHNP Board Review prepares students and graduates for the certification examinations administered by the AMCB and the NCC. More than 700 multiple-choice questions, written and reviewed by Georgetown faculty, clinicians and alumni, with content review, rationales and references.

"This is us putting all our efforts forward to help grow and diversify the midwifery and women's health nurse practitioner workforce," said Heather Bradford, PhD, CNM, FACNM, lead editor and assistant program director.

Bradford co-edited the book with Katie Atkin, DNP, WHNP-BC, ANP-BC, and Melicia Escobar, DNP, CNM, WHNP-BC, FACNM. The three received Georgetown's 2026 Commercialization Award for the work.

Grounded in cura personalis, the book also covers study skills, time management, self-reflection and building an individualized study plan. All proceeds from the sales of the book support the program's Student Emergency Fund.

Dean Roberta Waite calls it "such a gift to the profession."

The book is available through Amazon. Read more about the link in our bio.

"It is never too late to pursue your dreams."

Emily Piccone (G'26) returned to school after 15 years away, finishing prerequisites while raising children as a military spouse. Matthew Small (G'26) worked as an EMT through COVID-19 and came to Georgetown to see patient care through to the end.

Both are in our Accelerated BSN, a one-year program for career changers who already hold a bachelor's degree. 45 hours a week. 700+ clinical hours. Simulation at the O'Neill Center and rotations at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.

"Going from classroom lectures straight to the floor within a month felt fast but also great." — Matthew Small

January 2027 applications close soon. Link in bio.
