‘TO CREATE IS TO DESTROY, INSTALLATION IN 3 ACTS’ (GradEx 2024) - a multimedia living/dying installation that seeks primarily to confront the destruction inherent in creation, and the inescapable futility of the attempt to pretend otherwise.

To become requires a ceasing to be.

————————

I use my body to skin a beet (also a body). Once complete, I coat her in later after layer of varnish (carefully). I warp her into something strange and beautiful; the sculpture. I sit her atop a pedestal, spotlit. She sits this way between two long sheets of muslin that move with the currents of moving bodies. Projected on each sheet is a video. On one side, a video of my hands as they cut, skin, mutilate. On the other, my hands, now stained, washing themselves over and over and over again. The stain does not leave them.

She sits like this, on display and in dialogue, for the entirety of the exhibition. Shrinking, wrinkling, bleeding. Her decay continues regardless of the varnish, though changed now;
a protest, a truth, a question.

———————

I have been sitting with this work for months in the hopes of finding the right words to express all it holds for me, but I must admit I have yet to untangle all the webs of meaning I have found in it. Grief, certainly, and in many iterations. Bodies. Sensuality. Ritual. Life. Death. Truth. Destruction. Creation. Transformation. Guilt. Hope too, somehow.

Sometimes I wonder if what I see in it even matters much at all, or if the point is moreso to make, and to ask you instead. by @guadaka

The Othering Body /

interrogating the existence of the ‘norm’ and the relative process of othering / the ways in which we enact othering onto those around us, as well as ourselves / work done for a course on disability justice, politics, & theory

*thinking of how much I’d love to recreate this as a performance & installation in a gallery space* by @guadaka

It’s been two years since we kissed for the first time, under this same moon and surrounded by all the trees. My love, my baker, my gardener, my jester, my dreamer - to love and be loved by you is to believe in tomorrow. I do not know a gift greater than that. I am certain your hands have held mine and mine yours in every life and every universe I have ever traversed. Forgive me for keeping you up at midnight while I write this and rewrite this because no words I conjure are ever enough. I love you. Te amo. by @guadaka

DESIRE FROM ALL SIDES

desire as sacred, as innate, as necessary, as catalyst, as ritual, as shared

an experimental work; collected writings on desire, lovingly handwritten and sealed with a kiss of wax, placed in front of an audience with two rules:

01. You may not read a note without breaking its seal.
02. You must return the note from where you took it when you are finished with it. by @guadaka
