Oh here’s a fun one! We’re up to neat stuff at queer ballet club for the next little while, doing a full and technical barre to prepare us to get into the centre and learn the lilac fairy variation from sleeping beauty! I’ve wanted to teach a variation in this class for awhile and it’s just the right time now. We’ll probably spend the next few weeks learning it and then do a bit of coaching on it. I loooove teaching rep and this is a perfect solo for mixed levels of experience with ballet. Everyone worked their butts off and we learned the first two diagonals this week. Next week we will likely get through learning the choreography itself, and in subsequent weeks will take smaller groups. If you weren’t here last week, don’t worry! The first two diagonals are actually just two moves done over and over again so it won’t take long to pick up. Come dance with us, it’s so fun! #queerballetclub #torontodancers #queertoronto

Ok club, I admit it: I’ve been awful at the marketing side of things lately. And the class schedule changed, and everything is all wonky, and our numbers are getting slim. But that means there’s never been a better time for newbies to join! Never taken ballet? Tonight’s a perfect night for you to join. LGBTQs of Toronto, Say You’ll Be There and let me teach you how to push the floor away with your feet and the ceiling away with your head and float your arms like silk scarves in a gentle breeze 🩷💚🩷💚 #queerballetclub #torontodancers #ballet #queertoronto

One for the books tonight, everyone. We started class by meditating ourselves into a somatic wormhole. We then did a very full and very hard barre which everyone worked ferociously through - what a privilege it is to see people work! We didn’t get to the centre til quite late so for a little treat we learned the first couple movements of Myrtha’s entrance from the second act of Giselle, which we obviously performed in colourful veils with fun lighting making for a very psychedelic Giselle. I am constantly inspired by all of you who come to take my class, those of you who come again and again, those of you who try it out, those of you returning to ballet like an old friend and those of you meeting for the first time. Tonight I heard myself say the words “we need to democratize the canon” and maybe we’ll learn repertoire more often. It’s especially fun in this lighting. Thanks everyone for being so brave and cool. Xoxo

At Queer Ballet club last week everyone worked SO hard. We took a deep dive into adage and talked a LOT about the mechanics of developés. Before class we had a little bun-making workshop in the lobby while the capoeira students in the next studio tuned an incredibly loud instrument that went DONG DONG DONG. After class we talked about pointe work (as u know I’m on a journey) and what’s involved building up that strength plus what the heck the shoes look like. I’m blessed and lucky and so happy to have this group of regulars and newbies every week to hang out with and talk about ballet, which I’m realizing might actually just be my favourite thing. Class tonight! Come dance with us ❤️❤️❤️ #queerballetclub #ballet #queertoronto #torontodancers

Just the past two months of nobody caring about ballet anymore and showing that by coming to Queer Ballet Club (among other things) every week 🤡 #ballet #timothéechalamet

The trouble with making all my QBC posts into little collages is that then I put it off and don’t do it right away and wait til the weekend, but maybe it’s cool to have a bit less immediacy. We had a small group this week and spent much of the night working on turns, with a truncated barre (part of my pedagogical quest to get us off the barre in a reasonable timeframe) and a bunch of quite tricky balance exercises. Turns are hard! Maybe we’ll keep working on them, or maybe we’ll keep going where the wind takes us. #queerballetclub #weirdballet #queertoronto #torontodance background image Hannah Hoch

I’m doing a lot of teaching this January, trying to make material work in really different contexts, and as always, cursing the absence of accompanists everywhere. Within this I’ve been thinking about how Queer Ballet Club really is a CLUB! We run on our own time zone, we have regulars, we have newbies, everyone always chats, we take our little group photo, and then we struggle to leave the studio. I missed this so much over the holidays, what a treat it was to be back. QBC forever ❤️ #queerballetclub #queerdance #queertoronto #torontodance

Missing queer ballet club after a week of holidays, so here, a week-and-a-bit late, is our group photo from the week before. Still following this cycle that one week moves slow with lots of technique and the next week moves quick with a full class. Our next upcoming class is on December 2nd and will be a zippy fast moving one! And stay tuned because I’ll be teaching a lot more in the new year, so if you want even more weird and queer ballet it’s coming your way! #queerballetclub #queerballet #torontodance

Guys every time the scarves come out everyone gets a little gayer. They’re just fun! I love us and I love Queer Ballet Club. Last night we worked our way through a whole new class and a ton of new material. I talked about choreographic efficiency (like let’s just do the same exercise again, ok?) and we discussed the choreography of skipping. @queerdanceculture joined us to share a zine and a dance. I’m sorry some of your beautiful faces got covered for our group photo! Otherwise, a fun night as usual 💕💕 #queerballetclub #dance #torontodance #queertoronto

So two things are happening: 1. The new Instagram image constraints make it really hard to take a group photo that shows up on the grid and 2. I don’t want this grid to be a series of identical photos so I suppose I am making collages now? But anyway: last night we did some real big dancing. A full class! I managed not to deliver any dissertations and we did, in the words of @twink182_ - the “gayest thing we’ve ever done” (we skipped around the room together, very gaily). If I got to keep teaching Queer Ballet Club for my whole life that wouldn’t be enough. And just for the vibe, this Chopin piece that’s doing numbers on TikTok 🎹 #queerballetclub #ballet #dance #toronto #queertoronto
