Music for presence
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
With Mystic Hymnal, we are (re)imagining a new way of worship.
We’ve found that many of us feel lonely & are longing to be together in real life;
that many of us miss or are curious about worship…but don’t know where to go or what to sing.

Soooo… We’re taking Mystic Hymnal on its first-ever road trip this Spring, and we’d love to invite you!!
If you’d like to be together with humans in a non-judgmental space that combines group singing, embodiment, and guided moments of Presence…we hope you will join us.

The songs we sing are 1) singable, 2) kind, and 3) musically beautiful.

You’re welcome to sing, you’re welcome to be silent – the only invitation is to be as you are.

Mystic Hymnal events are 90-minute gatherings led by @michaelgungor that use group-singing as a spiritual practice for sharing non-judgmental presence and, ultimately, for remembering Who We Are, together.

Everyone is welcome at Mystic Hymnal. No beliefs or singing abilities are required. 💗

The first characteristic of a Mystic Hymnal song is how singable the song itself is.

This ingredient might seem obvious at first, but we have noticed that humans are seemingly & simply singing less than they used to in the spaces that we have historically gathered to sing in.

While we think there are several things that play into this… one of the main ones we have come to notice is that the music that is currently designed for groups to sing is actually *less singable* than it used to be.

In our culture, one of the primary places that we gather to sing with other people are places of worship.
We started Mystic Hymnal because many of us have been in these spaces lately, have looked around, and noticed that folks simply are not singing along the way that they used to.

The history of worship music itself is actually a pretty good tool in understanding what we mean by a song’s sing-ability.
If you listen to worship music from the eighties & nineties for example, you’ll often hear a chorus of multiple voices singing a simple melody.
If you listen to the worship music that is played on the radio today, you’ll most likely always hear one (very good/skilled) lead vocalist belting out notes that the average un-musically trained person can’t quite sing themself.

Neither of these types of worship music are better than the other…but one is more accessible for groups to sing along to.

Even if we have never found ourself in a place of worship, we probably all have sung “Happy Birthday” with a group of other people.
“Happy Birthday” is actually a fairly good example of a song that IS singable; almost everyone can sing *and* remember its melody.

We are exploring what happens when you make/curate music that all people can sing – regardless of anyone’s musical training, background or beliefs.

All songs that fit into the Mystic Hymnal framework must contain three elements: 1) singable, 2) musically alive, 3) theologically kind/unitive.
Often songs designed for group singing check one or two the boxes…but not all three of them. What happens when we intentionally combine all three?

I’m playing a solo Gungor show in Asheville, NC this Friday (5/22). I’ve been on tour with Mystic Hymnal, and may throw a couple of those songs in as well, but this is the only show for awhile that I’ll be playing Gungor material. So would love to see you there!

@lauracworship and I just released a song this morning called “Yeshua.”

And honestly, this is not a song I would have released for the last 15 years because I probably would have thought it was too simple. It’s mostly just the name: Yeshua Hamashiach over and over again. It just means “Jesus, the Anointed One.”

Now why would I go and do something like that?

As I sometimes tell my hippie friends—Yeshua is my guru.

Yeshua/Jesus is the path that I found myself seen and loved within. The path that eventually dissolved all paths. Christ was, and is, the unconditional love that melted any sense of alienation and exile into an endless ocean of Love. That’s not a theological claim I’m making about anyone else’s path. I don’t think anybody needs to walk the path I’ve walked in order to be free or perfectly loved. But it has been my path.

And so this song is essentially just a chanting of the name that has been used in my own journey as a pointer toward infinite love. Not to appease someone “up there.” But to re-member that which is already within. To surrender into the Ocean that already is All in All. Plus, I think the song is pretty groovy.

There’s a long version and a short version. Whichever you enjoy more—my hope is that you’ll use it not just as background music but as an invitation into the fullness of this moment. Into the presence that Yeshua embodied.

P.S. Laura C is joining me on the Mystic Hymnal tour in Austin on May 23rd. If you’re anywhere near Texas, come sing with us

P.P.S. If you’re not near Texas, there are some new dates in that tour link too if you want to see where we will be by @gungormusic

Call Me By My True Names
by Thich Nhat Hanh

Don’t say that I will depart tomorrow—
even today I am still arriving.

Look deeply: every second I am arriving
to be a bud on a Spring branch,
to be a tiny bird, with still-fragile wings,
learning to sing in my new nest,
to be a caterpillar in the heart of a flower,
to be a jewel hiding itself in a stone.

I still arrive, in order to laugh and to cry,
to fear and to hope.
The rhythm of my heart is the birth and death
of all that is alive.

I am a mayfly metamorphosing
on the surface of the river.
And I am the bird
that swoops down to swallow the mayfly.

I am a frog swimming happily
in the clear water of a pond.
And I am the grass-snake
that silently feeds itself on the frog.

I am the child in Uganda, all skin and bones,
my legs as thin as bamboo sticks.
And I am the arms merchant,
selling deadly weapons to Uganda.

I am the twelve-year-old girl,
refugee on a small boat,
who throws herself into the ocean
after being raped by a sea pirate.

And I am also the pirate,
my heart not yet capable
of seeing and loving.

I am a member of the politburo,
with plenty of power in my hands.
And I am the man who has to pay
his “debt of blood” to my people
dying slowly in a forced-labor camp.

My joy is like Spring, so warm
it makes flowers bloom all over the Earth.
My pain is like a river of tears,
so vast it fills the four oceans.

Please call me by my true names,
so I can hear all my cries and laughter at once,
so I can see that my joy and pain are one.

Please call me by my true names,
so I can wake up
and the door of my heart
could be left open,
the door of compassion. by @gungormusic
