KeSTRA MeLoDY's song of the day weekly recap
22nd-28th June

22.06.26 The Ballad of Sweeney Todd by Stephen Sondheim

Today, I went down to London as part of a cast of sweeney todd and performed on a west end stage for the national school theatre awards, this is what we sang. nothing will ever beat the feeling of singing this in a massive group of people.

23.06.26 Wait (The Ellie Dixon Remix) by @gabpapillon
@elliedixonmusic
I'm never usually a fan of remixes but I like this version so much better than the original, probably because it has more harmonies and that's my jam. you'll catch me headbanging to this song in the car a lot. The original is a banger too, but made a beautiful foundation for this masterpiece.

24.06.26 War of Hearts by @ruellemusic

I've heard this song on so many tiktok edits and I always think it's so beautifully epic and powerful and now I've listened to the full version I think it's even more so.

25.06.26 Wake up sleeper by @gungormusic

I love the interesting uses of violin on this song, along with the weird genre change to that very heavy synth section at the end. I also like the meaning of this song, that god is for everyone "the kingdom is yours".

26.06.26 Tongues and Teeth by @thecranewives

I think this is probably my favourite song by the crane wives. I think the crane wives come up with really interesting ideas but I particularly like the idea of "I am not a vessel for your good intent"

27.06.26 L.A by @couch.theband

I would say that this is my current favourite song, just absolutely been getting me through the heatwave and gives me summery vibes. also it's great to sing along really loud to while home alone.

28.06.26 Wait by @deamatronaband

I realised earlier that this is the second song named "wait" that I've used this week lol. anyway, I just think this song has a great tune. I love the harmonies these two use in their music and I would dub them the modern day Heart.

The first characteristic of a Mystic Hymnal song is how singable the song itself is.

This ingredient might seem obvious at first, but we have noticed that humans are seemingly & simply singing less than they used to in the spaces that we have historically gathered to sing in.

While we think there are several things that play into this… one of the main ones we have come to notice is that the music that is currently designed for groups to sing is actually *less singable* than it used to be.

In our culture, one of the primary places that we gather to sing with other people are places of worship.
We started Mystic Hymnal because many of us have been in these spaces lately, have looked around, and noticed that folks simply are not singing along the way that they used to.

The history of worship music itself is actually a pretty good tool in understanding what we mean by a song’s sing-ability.
If you listen to worship music from the eighties & nineties for example, you’ll often hear a chorus of multiple voices singing a simple melody.
If you listen to the worship music that is played on the radio today, you’ll most likely always hear one (very good/skilled) lead vocalist belting out notes that the average un-musically trained person can’t quite sing themself.

Neither of these types of worship music are better than the other…but one is more accessible for groups to sing along to.

Even if we have never found ourself in a place of worship, we probably all have sung “Happy Birthday” with a group of other people.
“Happy Birthday” is actually a fairly good example of a song that IS singable; almost everyone can sing *and* remember its melody.

We are exploring what happens when you make/curate music that all people can sing – regardless of anyone’s musical training, background or beliefs.

All songs that fit into the Mystic Hymnal framework must contain three elements: 1) singable, 2) musically alive, 3) theologically kind/unitive.
Often songs designed for group singing check one or two the boxes…but not all three of them. What happens when we intentionally combine all three?

Man… words really can’t describe the gratitude I feel after experiencing the Mystic Hymnal.

I’ve been part of church most of my life and have experienced many different expressions of worship over the years… but this morning felt unlike anything I’ve experienced before.

It was honest. Reflective. Grounding. Expansive.
The kind of experience that doesn’t just stay in the room with you… it follows you home and sits with your spirit.

Really grateful for the community, the church, and for Michael Gungor helping create such a meaningful experience.

Moments like this remind me that growth, wonder, and connection with God can still surprise you. ❤️‍🔥 @gatherhouston @michaelgungor @gungormusic
