The Skate Muzik / Jazzmatazz listening session at @cooperhewitt , Smithsonian Design Museum. Thank you to everyone who came through to celebrate the legacy of Guru and the world of Jazzmatazz with us. A special thank you to @djpremier for pulling up and sharing the moment, and to @devonojas for the space, the sound, and the opportunity to experience this music the way it deserves to be heard. Thank you @chrisk1m for your support. Originally released in May 1993, Jazzmatazz still stands more than 30 years later as one of the defining experimental fusions of hip hop and jazz. R.I.P. Guru. 「Peace yo, and welcome to Jazzmatazz.」 An experimental fusion of hip-hop and live jazz. I’m your host the Guru - that stands for Gifted, Unlimited, Rhymes, Universal. Now I’ve always thought of doing something like this but I didn’t want to do it unless it was going to be done right, know what I’m saying? Cause hip-hop, rap music, it’s real, It’s musical, cultural expression based on reality. And at the same time, jazz is real, and based on reality. Gang Starr’s music has travelled through successive eras of skateboarding, remaining faithful to its own language while helping define the character of each one. Guru’s voice over Premier beats carries a timeless quality: a sound that belongs as naturally to a video part today as it did thirty years ago, untouched by changing styles. Watching someone skate to Gang Starr adds another dimension to something already special, choosing one of their tracks has always carried a certain meaning, a statement of style that continues to resonate across the years. Their catalogue belongs to the shared heritage of hip-hop, and its reach extends far beyond it. For everything their music has given skateboarding and the world, we remain grateful to DJ Premier and to the memory of Guru. To celebrate Jazzmatazz, first released in May 1993, next Thursday in New York Skate Muzik together with Keith Elam will host a special listening session inside Devon Turnbull’s HiFi Pursuit Listening Room Dream No.3 at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. The session will celebrate the legacy of Jazzmatazz through a selection of music experienced on Turnbull’s large-scale handmade sound system inside the historic Carnegie Library. A rare opportunity to hear Jazzmatazz in a space designed entirely around deep listening, texture, emotion and natural sound. Tickets available via the link in bio.
